I am a firm believer that a tradesman is worthy of his hire, but it does make my blood boil when people are ripped off without mercy. For example, if I had to cut a 1000mm piece off a 1200 wide sheet, I'd charge for the full 1200 width most likely, but if I cut say 800, then I would charge for only the 800 width as the 400 remaining is a meaningful offcut. I see people stung exorbitant amounts for cutting. Let's be honest, it takes no time or effort hardly to guillotine a piece of sheet, (yes I know you had to buy the guillotine, but it wasn't just bought for that one job now was it).
Altogether too many people looking to extract more than their fair share. You can shear a sheep multiple times, but can skin it only once.

Some places will charge you for the full sheet, as most people won't ask for the offcut, and the "offcut" will be charged out again at a full sheet. I found this out by a friend who worked in a place where I got some stainless cut. Won't be going back there again,

Same in the heavy steel cutting biz. They charge you for the drop but like to keep it. One job I got my staff to get quotes on was a 500mm OD x 40mm wide ring out of 40mm 316 plate. We were going to do the machining ourselves, just wanted a plasma/laser cut rough ring. I thought the price was damn high so asked why - was told that they'd have to cut it out of a piece of plate so would bill for the entire 500 x 500 section. OK what about the drop - if I'm paying for it I want it. They offered $50 off if they got to keep it.

Nope, I took it as well.

It was still kicking about the workshop when I left but hey, maybe one day we'd want a smaller ring and if not, it'd make a great small BBQ plate.....
