Help identify a vintage mining pick
I was unloading dirt and rock at the local tip and was approached by an old man. He was likely well into his 80s and he wanted to show me a tool he brought over many years ago from South Africa. It was apparently used in the mines South Africa in the 60’s. It was a type of pick (with original axe handle) that had a bowled tear drop shaped head. I can’t find any photos or descriptions of this type of tool. The old bloke wanted me to give it a go, so I politely obliged. It made moving the dirt out of the ute a lot faster than the shovel. You could pick and shovel all in one motion. I’m now curious to know the name of the tool and track down some photos.
