    Default Angle Grinder Abrasive Discs

I'm looking for recommendations for reasonably priced abrasive discs for my 100mm angle grinder. I recently threw out a wire wheel because I reckon it was dangerous. It would sometimes catch on edges and kick violently. It also threw off pieces of wire. Today I bought a Flex-O-Vit abrasive disc at Bunnings. While it worked very well it didn't last long. I used it to descale a 2m length of 40x5 flat steel. It was a quick job, but the disc was over half worn when I had finished. At $17 each that's not going to work. I also bought a Josco flap disc for $7. I suspect it will last longer, but it looks a lot more aggressive. What do you guys use?

Hi Chris, I use flap discs, they're available in a variety of grits from 40 upwards. We're now trying Ceramic Flaf discs to see how they go, they're more expensive but seem to last longer.
I've found that once they're half worn they seem to polish, which is why we're trying the ceramics. One of the workers does a lot of aluminium, and found that clogging of the grits was a problem, so he gives it a squirt of WD40 every so often to help clean the discs.
To help with milscale use a very aggressive disc, or try chemical cleaning.

I rarely use grinding discs anymore, i normally pay $10 for 10 x 4" flap discs at the market and I have also seen them on ebay for the same price.
No they are not the greatest flap discs but still much cheaper to use than a flexovit, you might use 2 or 3 of these to
    1 flexovit disc.

    cheers, shed

edit.... i couldn't find the cheapy's on ebay chris, here are 20 for 28 bucks https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/20-X-Ang...frcectupt=true

I was collecting scrap steel on a farm a week or so ago. Using 5" 1.0mm cutoff wheels on a cordless grinder.
As it was a 'git-er-done' kind of job, I grabbed the odds and sods of discs I had laying around.
1 lot was a carbonondum cheap wheel
The other lot was a flexovit ION wheel especially suited for the high torque, lower speeds of the cordless grinders.

On 10mm round bar that held the structural bits together, the cheap wheels were good for 5 or so cuts.
The quality discs lasted for 15+ cuts. Even the 4.5" discs of the same forumlation lasted longer.

If I were on a deadline, and / or paying very expensive people to do this job for me, it would be cheaper BY FAR to pay the premium for the quality discs.
Me being an impatient bastard, I was getting sick of spending more time locking the wheel, searching for the pin spanner in the dirt (I was also on the side of a steep hill), and replacing the disc every minute. My patience was wearing very thin with the crap discs.

    Same goes for grinding wheels.
I've been using the flexi back up pads and the 3M Cubitron 2 sanding pads. These are amazing. The ceramic material they are made of self sharpens as it wears and gives and almost machined surface rather than the blue glazed surface of many of the alox and zairconia grain abrasives. Very minimal heat into the job too. They also last a very long time.

Plus one for ceramic pads and flap wheels.
I've had success with the Josco ceramic wheels.
The 60 grit wheels perform like 40 grit standard wheels and the 80's perform like the 60 grit standards.

Just buy them from eBay in 10x,20x or 50x packs, there cheap and disposable.
    I wouldn't pay shop prices like $17.

The best thing that I have found for descaling steel is ZEC discs. They are a heavily segmented carborundum disc available in a few grit sizes.

What you have there is a strip disc. (they are not cheap no matter the brand). They are great for light work ie. paint, light to medium rust and the such.
For removing scale and other heavy work you need to move to flap disc`s.
In some cases you might even be better doing a quick run over with a hard grinding disc. This can break up the surface a bit and make it easier for the flap disc to do its work.

I am a fan of flexovit and used their disc`s for many years but that is while I was making money (and saving time) doing it. Know its all home stuff they are just too expensive.
Josco, their wire wheels used to be the best. However the last time I used them about 5 -6 years ago they fell apart quickly and lasted no longer than the cheaper brands.
There was a ebay seller in Sydney I use to buy all my stuff from. Bought in bulk making the unit price cheap. I shall try and find their details if needed.

    Hi Guys,

I concur with the collective opinion ! Flap discs every time for me. I occasionally use one on a mandrel in the mill. A lovely finish, but very messy, with the gritty dust they produce.

Thanks for all the recommendations gents. It looks like flap discs are the go.

    BobL,
Josco don't make the red ceramic flap disc in 100mm. Only 115mm and up. I'll see how the Josco blue zirconia flap disc I have works. I'll also grab some of the eBay cheapies John (shedhappens) recommended.

It looks like 100mm angle grinders are out of favour, with 115mm now being the starting size. However I'm not ready to give up on my Metabo 100mm yet. Maybe a cordless 115mm somewhere down the track.

Thanks. I'd never heard of them. They come in a few types. Can you please let me know which type you used? ZEC | ABRASIVE DISCS
    Also where you bought them?
    Cheers.

Thanks. Just to clarify, are you using those on your AG or sander? I see they also make a flap disc, but sadly not in 100mm. Can you please let me know which of the products on this page you are referring to? https://www.3m.com.au/3M/en_AU/cubitronII-au/

Josco used to make them because when I last bought my 125mm discs at bunnings a few months ago there were boxes full of the 100mm on special for next to nothing which sort of agrees with your second sentence above.

The blue Josco flap discs can be bought cheaply by the box. As little as $2.25 each. Better than $7.70 ea at Bunnings.
