Scrap yard goodies !
Hi Guys,
I’ve been nosing around in the scrap yard again this morning, looking for a piece of aluminium bar to make the calibrated knob for the TCG. I also found an old tin with some bits and pieces in it. The nice man at the scrap yard had also found a set of number stamps which he had kindly put on one side. I also picked up a very old thermostat in a Bakelite case.

This is the tin that I found with all the items in the family picture, exept for the number stamps and the 5" micrometer standard, manufactured by J. Slocum of Sheffield, UK.

These are the number stamps. They look to be about 5 mm in size. Very faintly stamped into the wood is the name Hook?? and what looks like a date 1986 or it could be 1988. They are very rusty, I'm going to try and de-rust them.

These were in the tin. A collection of mainly taps, some are broken. That "T" slot cutter in the middle is a MT3 taper shank. A couple still have the protective coating on them. That little tool bit on the right is a 55 degree threading bit.

This is the thermostat that I picked up simply out of curiosity. I took the case off just to have a look inside. That knob on the right compresses that thumping great spring. I wound it down to as low as it would go and blew hot air on it, those contacts close with a loud thud. I wouldn't like to have that on the wall controlling my central heating.
Not bad for a couple of pounds.Best Regards:

Hi China,
Yes I did, thanks for asking. I forgot to mention that I had. A chunk of 55 mm round bar about 35 mm long.
I did start to machine it last night. I've faced off both sides and centre drilled it, ready to drill the hole for the TCG control spindle. The outside is a bit rough, so I hope that it will clean up without making it too small in diameter.Best Regards:
