Advice on adjusting an AL-50GA compound slide
Yes, I know the poor old AL-50GA from the rabbits is the bottom end of the range, but I have had it for many years. Within its limitations, it works fine.
Now I want to remove a small amount of backlash from the compound slide. The manual says to remove the two screws holding the spindle bracket and to remove the spindle. Then 'adjust the screw ring'. The accompanying diagram is totally obscure.
I have removed the spindle bracket, slid the top part of the slide out of the way, and peered into the internals. Um ... WHAT screw ring?
I can see a very small protrusion around the threaded shaft, but how to adjust that is a bit of a mystery to me! It is very narrow and it has one slot at the side which is almost useless without some very custom tool (not supplied), and it does not seem to want to 'adjust' anyhow.
Help. Has anyone managed to do this?
Cheers

It's the backlash adjusting screw.
Check page 19 of the following pdf:
http://content.jettools.com/assets/m...55K_man_EN.pdfThe worst that can happen is you will fail.
But at least you tried.

Ask and receive
Ask and ye shall receive! My thanks to both of you.
The PDF version of the manual for the JET lathe has good clear grey-scale photos where my manual has a different and obscure photo which actually conceals the adjustment. The JET lathe is a little different in the turns-ratio adjustment box, but the rest of the lathe is pretty much the same. I have downloaded the PDF.
OK, now I know what to adjust. I have tried to move that 'screw' but with no joy so far. Have you managed to adjust this? Should I remove the threaded shaft completely first? And what sort of tool have you used for this? All advice received with gratitude.
Cheers

I have no experience with that lathe.
My course of action would be to contact the Yahoo 9x20 group and ask the "how" question there.

If they don't know, then I guess nobody does
From past experience with Yahoo groups, I expect they will make you most welcome and answer your questions correctly.

Yahoo! must be still living in the Dark Ages. With that sort of attitude towards possible subscribers, no wonder they are dying.
Well, thanks anyhow.

Hi Rob,
Yes there are a few of us about Good to hear from you.
I'm running Q4OS with Trinity desktop on an i7 with 10 Gb ram. Quite a dramatic change in speed compared to the AMD quad core Athlon with 4 Gb ram that I was using. That memory is now in the new machine along with a spare 2 Gb stick that I had. Not that its using any swap at all.
I moved from Ubuntu simply because trying to keep up with the changes became a pain ! With Q4OS all the changes and updates are automatically fed to me and installed automatically subject to acceptance. Any fixes are rapidly sorted, very often before you realise that one is needed.Best Regards:
Baron J.
