I've been watching that series - it's just getting to the interesting bit where, as he says, a lot of questions will be answered.

There has been a few electronic leadscrew builds on the TUBE over the years, this one impresses me with the thoroughness with which he has gone into every little detail.

I tried this with the compound slide but, couldn't find a stepper with enough power. One of the other problems was the availability of parts: a stepper controller was easy enough to source but trying to source belts and pulleys of the appropriate sizes drove me nuts. In the end I just gave up.

I'll be interested in following this to see if the stepper he has chosen has enough power. Moving the carriage via a leadscrew takes a little more oomph than a compound slide.

Some time ago (last few years) there were several articles on building a stepper head lathe, in MEW. This is powered by stepper motors namely Nema23s, have added a link to help you.
