    Default Hydraulic Jack help

    Hi Guys
I have an old hydraulic Jack Id like to use in a simple press.
It pumps up ok but when I stand on the top of the piston it slowly contracts back to the start position.
I didnt turn the little jacking ring through 90 degrees either.
Any suggestions how to fix it, if possible
Its marked A5 and I have not used it in 40 years

A couple of possibilities but the most likely one I have seen is the hydraulic oil release screw or seat is dirty or damaged.
When this happened to be I removed the screw and cleaned it up and it then worked.

Brian, your jack is a old Lightburn or a copy, I would drain the oil out of it a try flushing with ATF.

ATF == Automatic Transmission Fluid, but any medium grade hydraulic oil should be OK I'd reckon

It's the screw you turn to let the jack down. I assume your jack has one of these otherwise how does do you let it go down.

Oh I see its one of those where the lever ring is rotated thru 90º - in that case scrap my idea. I'd go with whitey's idea of changing the oil.

Unless otherwise specified by the manufacture NEVER, NEVER ever use ATF in any hydraulic systems. The additives in ATF can result in a softening of the seal and premature failure.

Any hydraulic system that has not been used for 40 years should be stripped and have the seals replaced. The seals will either be rock hard or soft and gooee. Not good when applying a load.

So it appears this might be a much more complicated job than I realise/

It should not be to hard to pull apart and service.
By the looks of it there should only be a circlip and a retainer ring holding the rod/piston in.
The pump piston might just pull straight out. If not there might be a circlip holding that in as well.
Behind the plug on the lower right hand side there should be some springs and balls. Just be carefull to note the order in which it all comes out.
Seals and O rings should be off the shelf arrangement.
