Default AL-960 fitting a quick change tool post?

I recently purchased a second hand AL-960 with DRO and want to fit a QA-140 (AXA? 259-200) tool post from F&H. I was told that I would have to bore out the base of the tool post to fit the stud, I wasn't told the stud would be about 25mm short!!

So I figured I'd machine a new stud, so I can use the original tool post as required.

I can't get the stud out.

From a post I found in the archives, it seems there may be a grub screw locking the stud from below. Unfortunately none of the pictures have survived.

My compound slide is a solid piece with no T slot and ,unlike my previous lathe where you wind the compound back until it comes off the lead screw, I can't figure out how to remove it. It winds only so far then stops.

Could someone let me know how to go about removing the compound and perhaps confirm how to get the tool post stud out?

    Thanks in advance...

I would say you will have to remove the lead screw. Should be pretty straight forward. Start with removing the handle.

Yep, that did it. Nothing locking the stud in and I can't budge it using vice grips around leather.

    I'll keep at it

    Thanks for the tip!

Default AL-960 fitting a quick change tool post?

Does the stud look like it's got a flange on the bottom?

No Steve, it's a 16 mm stud which flares to 24 mm at the base. When I removed the compound I could see the hole is threaded through and through, but no grub screw or anything to clamp the thread. The thread is quite coarse, coarser than the bolt supplied with the QCTP. Naturally it's a long weekend here in Perth, so I'll have to wait until Tuesday to try and source some lock nuts to try and remove it.

I might try hitting the stud with a heat source to see if there's any thread locking compound applied.

Guys, did you end up solving this problem ? I've been at it for about 2 hours trying strong clamping and also Heat without any success. I've taken the assembly apart and clearly there is nothing locking the post in, other than loctite or similar. Also from my reckoning, the Thread in the Base Cross-slide Casting is M16 x 2mm Pitch qnd the thread on the new bolt that comes with the QCTP is 1.5 Pitch, so it is looking like I'm going to have to make up a new Bolt that is the Length of the one supplied with the QCTP but has 2mm Pitch on one end and 1.5 on the other.

Is this what others did ? and did you eventually get the Bolt out with Heat ?

    Hi Fatfergus,

    Welcome to the forums

The originator of this thread has not posted since June 2019. Hence,we here at the Metalworkers Forums have no idea idea of the outcome of his enquiry.

In an ideal world everyone would follow up their post and let the folk who took the time to respond to their post, the outcome, good or bad, but many do not.

Thanks to those people who do reply with a post and sometimes photos.

It is a sad fact that once they have a solution to a problem, many do not bother to post their results.

It makes for a much better forum when people who get helped, reply and let the rest of us know how they fared.

Hopefully a member who has had the same lathe as you and been successful in fitting a tool post, will reply.

May I suggest taking some good quality photos and posting them in a new and separate thread including your lathe lathe model number in the title.

Something like " member needs help with QC toolpost for AL-960 lathe"

    Cheers
    Grahame

    Hi Grahame

I also messaged Darce and he did in fact reply, so for the benefit of all, I am posting his info here (but I will be adding a further update once my final solution is implemented (with photos) as I understand this is a likely common situation that others will have, regardless of which model Lathe as the QCTP is generic.

    Darce's reply:
I machined up a pair of nuts to lock onto the thread and leant on it until it came free. Since I wanted to be able use the original toolpost as well I made a longer version of the same post to suit the quick change - from memory about 20mm longer. When I use the original tool holder I use a space to make up the difference. I didn't use heat in the end, just gave it a tappity tap tap to break the seal.
