Which lathe should I keep ?
Hey guys I'm in a dilemma I have 2 nice lathes and only have room for one. I've owned a Hercus 260 G for a few years and love it as a small lathe. But last week I stumbled upon an Emco v10p with every accessory in the catalogue for a bargain price so of course it followed me home. I now have 2 lathes of the same capacity the Hercus seems alittle heavier duty but the fit and finish on the lighter Emco is superb. Cheers guys

I saw that emco come up, great buy! I would probably keep the emco but I'm a sucker for euro gear.
It has some pluses, parts are available but expensive, it has a d mount spindle nose and I assume is metric. Does it have power cross feed?
Plus it's loaded up
But I don't think you would go wrong with either, I'd just throw something else out and keep both.

Funnily enough it's an all Imperial machine with a threaded spindle. It does have every change gear for thread cutting and has power cross slide. Unfortunately only a 22mm spindle bore.

I dont know how anyone gets by with only one lathe, you need to have at least 2.

At LEAST 2....... let's not get onto how many milling machines you need either.
The Emco is likely a lot better built. OTOH it does have a smallish spindle bore. Personally I'd keep the Emco but I doubt there's much in it.
Now if it was a choice between an Emco Maximat 11 and a Hercus, you'd have to be insane or a total biased Hercus lover not to keep the Maximat. The V10P isn't at that level IMO.

Having owned an Emco V10 P many years ago, while being well built and well suited to a small home workshop environment it has a couple of minus points, the first being that unlike its bigger brothers the 11 and 13 (which are really very classy tools) it does not have a hardened bed and consequently unless kept away from abrasive materials and kept clean and well oiled it will wear pretty rapidly. I have seen one which had done a lot of cast iron machining, not cleaned etc etc and was very very worn on the ways. The second thing is that there is one major gear in the headstock which is fibre on a steel centre. Changing speeds without bringing the spindle to a complete stop will result in damage to the gear. A new gear in 1983 cost me $200 from Emco!. Apart from those two things the lathe was OK. I have no personal knowledge of the small geared head Hercus but I would expect that for one aspect, spare parts would be easier to source if needed.

Build a dual stand and buy a step ladder to run the top one

Get rid of them both. You can fit a much more capable lathe in the spot those two are taking up.
