Source for 20degree pressure angle 10dp involute gear cutters
I'm having a very hard time finding a source for 20degree pressure angle 10dp involute gear cutters. All the import stuff and second hand eBay cutters are all 14.5degree. I need to cut 22, 24, 26 tooth gears. Does anyone know of a source?
There are some US manufacturers but none are willing to ship out here. Ideally a used tooling place would be great.
Thanks everyone

Depending on accuracy required, why not single tooth cut them with a cutter made via the button process.
OR CNC with gearotic to make the g-code.Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

These are for a screw cutting gearbox, so the tooth form probably isn't critical but the surface finish and pitch accuracy are important. Do you have a link to a description of the two button process? I've heard about it before but never used it.

There are any number of new metric 20° PA gear cutters available on AliExpress. Could they be used as a work around considering the end use of the gears?
The 2 button system is covered in Ivan Law's gear cutting book and Sir John covered the system in several articles which will be dotted around the net.

Ahhh yep I have found a good article by john, I think that's worth pursuing for sure.
Does anyone in Melbourne have a copy of Ivan laws book I could photocopy? Or know where I can get a copy? I'm in a bit of a rush on this one
I don't think a module gear will do as I have a lot of money invested in the long cluster gear I have had made, hardened etc

You can download a pdf copy of Ivan's book from US Archives. Quality is not good, but reading it may help you to proceed with your project and buy a copy. You will find it here:

Caskwarrior,
You could try Tracey Tools LTD ([email protected]). They are a UK company & their service is very good. I have bought quite a few 20˚PA, gear cutters from them at a fraction of the cost of elsewhere. Some were second hand but had been sharpened correctly & all are UK made.
Regards,
Don.

Hi Guys,
I thought that "Module" and "DP" were two ways of describing the same thing ?Best Regards:

Caskwarrior, It might be worth a call to Mick Moyle's in Sydney. They have all kind of stuff, both new & SH.

Yes...and no.
DP (Diametric Pitch) is the imperial way of specifying gears. Module is the metric way. (DP= M/25.4 is the relevant formula I think)
Most usually DP system gears have a 14 1/2 degree pressure angle and Module have 20 degrees (although pressure angle is independent of system)
So while a 10DP gear is almost the same as a M2.5 gear, it's not quite.
Ivan Law's workshop practice book on gears explains it in greater detail.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for that explanation!
I do have Ivan's book, though I've not really studied it in any depth. I've not made any gears so its not been at the top of the list.
Obviously I've misunderstood the distinction between imperial and metric measurements and made a poor assumption.Best Regards:
Baron J.
