    Default Premo mk 1

    Hi everyone, I couldn’t see too much on here about these but I have just picked up a Pemo Mk 1 that looks to me to be in good condition for its age, come with 5 chucks, a stack of drill bits and end mills, (I think) most of the milling slide, a turret attachment (but no tools?) and (I think) all of the change gears but I dont have the detail or a chart to check it. I have lots to learn about this piece of our industrial history and I doubt I will ever get to a std where my “skills” will test its shortcomings but there’s hoping...

    Ill work out how to post some pix as the cleanup progresses as it is pretty grubby - WD40 and plenty of rags I think! It runs fine but needs a new flat belt. Is a link belt my best option for this?

    Id love to get a copy of the manual please if anyone has one and also to confirm if I have all the change gears, all and any help appeciated! Cheers Leigh

    Hi Leigh

    I've got a Premo. It has its good and bad points.

    The headstock alignment is a nightmare . The silly motor countershaft arrangment is crude , it vibrates horribly at the higher speeds . With a better motor drive system the Premo will perform well.

    Hi Leigh, found this on the Lathes UK website and have posted a link to it.
    Hopefully it'll give you some information; Premo and Veem lathes
    A manual is available also;

    Hi Morrisman, one of the photos Kryn posted shows a piece of chain hanging around the countershaft frame, I’m guessing that is hanging there to soak up some of that vibration - does that sound right?

    I will take a few pics of mine . This example here has V belts not flat belts. Maybe Its a mk2.The counter pulley on mine is a large diameter alloy two stepped pulley , I tried static balancing it but that had little effect. Its a good lathe I like it but it needs some tweaking .The counter shaft sits in a hinged casting that is mounted on the drip tray it pivots . its ok running the chuck at lower speeds but its horrible above 600 rpm. Spindle has TRB in it . One thing ,the half nut engagement is very poor it has no positive feel , the leadscrew pitch is rather fine for some reason .Be cautious when engaging the half nut... mine broke so I don't use the lathe for threading jobs.

    The leadscrew measures at .0625 " pitch or 1/16". That's why the half nut engagement is tricky . Will upload pics tomorrow.

    That's odd - are you sure it was original? Mine was 7/8" 8 TPI LH. I know this because I made a new leadscrew and half nuts for it.

    Mine was a Premo Mk 1 flat belt lathe, no QCGB, no power feeds other than leadscrew. It wasn't a good lathe but was pretty well beaten up by the time I got it so no real reflection on its original condition/function. I made V belt sheaves for it, made new back gears etc, new spindle, bearings, re-bored the headstock casting, line bored the tailstock. It still wasn't great though a lot better. I sold it to a friend of mine when I got a Chipmaster and then a Maximat 11.

    They are more robust and a bit more swing than a Hercus but that's not saying a lot.
