    Default Lathe Chucks

    The H&F AL960 Lathe comes with a 160mm 3 jaw and 200mm 4 jaw.

Why does it not come with say both 200 3 jaw and 200 4 jaw..doesnt a 200 3 jaw suit for some reason?

Most lathes are like this. I guess its because smaller 3 jawed chucks have less runt out and because the 4 jaw tends to be also used on odd shaped objects so it needs greater capacity?

I also think it is because a 4 jaw is easy to turn the jaws around in, so it is not run with much stick out but users will run a 3 jaw with jaws way out - stops hitting things?

Also smaller diameter chucks have higher speed ratings, the construction material being the same. 4 jaw chucks are usually holding something big/chunky and run slower.

I rarely use a 3 jaw chuck personally, don't have much use for them. Rather use a collet chuck for round bar up to 1-1/2" or a precision 4 jaw for bigger stuff/non-round work.

Ditto, I only use a 3 jaw for holding hex and I don't like changing chucks.
I have started using one of these straight shank er40 collet chucks for holding small stuff, works well in the 4 jaw and only
takes a few seconds to dial it in.
