    Default Repairing Hills rotary hoist

I have to make a couple of parts to repair my parent's old Hills rotary hoist. Complexity is that they and the hoist are in NZ and I'm in Melbourne so I don't have access to the hoist and my workshop at the same time.
I was over there earlier in the year and Dad and I pulled it apart and worked out the issue was the cap at the bottom of the "secondary tube" (the central pipe bit that goes up and down when you crank the handle) was rusted out. Subsequent research found its a common issue and the official fix is to buy a replacement tube with a new bottom cap.

I roughly measured the ID and OD of the tube with a tape measure so can turn up a new plug that will do the job, but it sits on the top of the worm shaft which has a conical end, with a nylon washer in between. I know its not critical, but would be nice to machine the angle in the plug so that it will sort of match the shaft and also make the washer. I should have taken a photo at the time so I could work it out but didn't

Here's a link to the Hills parts page showing the worm shaft and the conical nylon washer on top. https://hillsparts.com.au/repair-kit...line-fd900850/

Anyone hazard a guess as to the angle on the top of the worm shaft - or better still have access to one to actually measure it?

Looks to me to be about 45 degrees. Biggest problem would be to find one that's not worn out.

    Thanks Kryn.

That's a good point and made me realize I'm approaching it the wrong way.
I can easily match the old worm shaft to a new angle by hand if need be. It's only aluminum so won't take much to do.

I'll make up the new parts and throw a couple of decent files in my suitcase and should be good to go!!

    Hi Guys,

If it is anything like the channel 7 customs stuff they show here, it should be hilarious.

Sorry to disappoint, but I'll be putting them in my checked baggage...

I recall years ago flying into China with a colleague for work. We had some wireless barcode scanners that were referred to within the business as "RF guns".
Thankfully the Chinese officials didn't pick up on it when my offsider queried me on "so which bag did the guns end up in?"

Repair completed and the hoist goes up and down for the first time in 10 years

Here's a (poor) photo of the worm I was referring to.

Hi Steve, how close was I to the correct angle?

I didn't bother doing a check on the angle as it seemed to sit nicely on the top of the worm.
Looking at the photo, the worm looks like 90deg included angle so I reckon you nailed it!!
