Drill press hold down table
Saw something similar to this simple hold down table on the Eccentric Engineering Vid for assembling the Acute Sharp and thought I'd have a go at making one for my DP.
It turns out I already had this beaut piece of 250 x 250 x 20 mm steel plate I bought as scrap at a local steel merchant a few years ago and was going to use it as an extension table for the Hercus Mill but AB suggested it might be too heavy.
I was unsure of the lay out so I just drilled and tapped the inner area of 4 x 4 holes 40 mm apart, plus 4 holes in the corners, they can be used to store the hold down handles.
DPtable2.jpg
The holes are 5/16" to suit the 5/16" threaded re-postionable hold down handles I had on hand.

In some cases I might need to use longer bolts instead of these handles and might just use socket screws like Gary uses.
DPtable3.jpg
The underside of the table has a piece of 4mm thick galv SHS bolted to the table from underneath and this is held by a 125 mm cross sliding vice.

Now I need to give my hands a rest after tapping all those holes and besides my knee is pretty sore.

HI Bob, that's a nice bit of work, THANKS for putting it here. Only trouble is, something else I need to make now.

Actually it was not that bad. I made things easier for myself by using a 0.1mm lager drill size than normal as high thread strength is not essential. This enabled me to tap the whole 20 mm long thread without removing the tap to clear the swarf. I used Trefolex lube, and compressed air and a second tap in a battery drill to clear out the threads. I did about 5 threads and then went and did something else for half an hour just to give my hands a break

Richard, I have a tapping head (MT2) that I use for repetitive tapping like that. You are welcome to borrow it if you like.

A nice job on that thick piece of plate, I am sure you will find it handy for holding awkward shaped parts in your mill as well as the drill. I made a mini pallet 220mm*150mm a couple of years ago after watching one of Tom Lipton's videos and have used it quite a few times on my mill and drill, it fits in both vises which makes for a quick set up. I have also used it on a face plate in the lathe. I just finished a job this morning with it in my drill.

BobL,
I spaced my hole pattern on a 25mm * 25mm centre and threaded them 5mm. Good idea to power tap them with a spiral point or spiral flute tap otherwise as you found out your arm will fall off, as you did on your thick plate drill one size larger and then it is easy. I made my hold down bars three different lengths and two different widths. One set has bars 40,50 &60 mm long and are made out of 14mm wide *6mm thick flat bar. The other set are 40 & 60 mm long and made out of 19mm wide * 6mm flat bar. All 12 mm bars are threaded with 5mm, the 19mm bars are threaded with 6mm.

WoodBee2 Hi Peter,
Yes you are correct about the vise, it is a project I made in Oct 2016. It is my version of a "Float Vise". I needed a bigger vise to hold larger parts on both my drill and mill.I just drew up some rough sketches and went from there. I did post the build and some pictures in "Your latest project" thread, have a look at posts #1687 & #1690.
