Herless SM1 or VM1
Hi,
Noticed this one on gumtree awhile ago.
https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/chel...m-1/1180992036
Looks a bit worn and too far away but its what I'm looking for. It's the right size for me (weight, height etc) with enough capability.
Does anyone still sell them new? Or do I need to keep looking out a for a good second hand one?
Ben

It just looks like the round column mill, square column is a lot better and not that much more expensive.Using Tapatalk

I don't think the one from Ben link is the same as the round Column. That is more of the Knee mill and the head can tilt too?

They're a good machine. I have an early 90's 8" x 30" SM-1. It is my first mill. It is Thai made - I checked with some old timers at H&F who were there in the Herless days.
I did a complete nut-and-bolt-and-bearing on mine after rescuing it from near death on a farm near Echuca. It will be going up for sale in a few months when I get the Bridgeport humming. Someone has already expressed an interest in it, but depending on how that goes I can contact you if you like.
PM me if you want more info on what they are like as a machine. Warts and all.
Greg.

I think that both of the machines are good buys, small turret mills are hard to get. I just drove 800Km and paid about $1000 off new price for a LW-VHO-A, bottom left on the catalogue. I can actually get it into the shed and it will do most of what I want.
There is a company in Brisbane who list something like the V0-AIS but they are a number that starts with a 7.

Long shot
Hi Greg this is going to be a long shot, seeing as it was a while ago the last post was put up but here goes.
I was just given a Herless Vertical Milling machine SM-1 like yours was mine is missing a few parts and in pretty rough shape, but unlike yours I have the ID Plate it says its a SM-1 and the serial number is 85816
I was wondering if you ever found a place that sold spare parts for it, its missing belts and some are that far gone id like to replace them. On the Id plate at the bottom it had MELB: 560-5655 ( 5 lines )
Thanks
Matthew.

Hi Matthew, you can find the belts about. Look on the grizzly site for the same machine and check the specs. They list the belt sizes. They were an A section V belt I recall. I got mind from CBC bearings, but lots of people supply belts.
One thing about the machine / belts. It always seems that I could never get the belts correct on it. In theory you need two, in practice I found I needed more as (say) the belts you used for the lowest speed were not easy to fit on (say) the fastest speed.
You say missing some other parts? Not sure what is missing, but those grizzly machines look pretty similar though not sure if I'd bet money that parts were interchangeable with other machines. but ... you never know ....

Hi Matthew I have a Herless SM-1 at my work and it takes 'B' section belts. The belts have always been a pain as I've had to use multiple sizes to cover all the speeds. I did a lot of searching on the internet trying to find the belt sizes, but had no luck. Apart from the Grizzly manuals and several others that I looked at I did find one manual that actually had 'SM-1' in it, but it only had belt part numbers which were SM-1052 and SM-1060. I would suggest trying B40, B39 and B35 belt sizes. I would be very interested to know how you go with the belts and if you find two sizes that will allow a full change of spindle speeds without stuffing around with multiple belts.
I pulled the head of my SM-1 at work apart, because of a bearing noise and it's still apart at the moment. I will be selling mine after I repair it as I've ended upgrading to a secondhand Hafco BM-20E turret mill. If I can help with pictures of parts or dimensions of parts let me know.
I nearly forgot some of the knee mills like the SM-1 that I looked at it do take A section belts, but the majority were B section belts. All The Best steran50 Stewart
