Shouldn’t a ball pien hammer have a hour glass eye? Tapered from both sides. That’s how we are taught to Forge hammers.

I vaguely remember my father replacing a handle (Claw hammer?) and filing/ rasping it to fit. I suspect that older hammers were what the manufacturer said they were and handles shaped to fit.

I worked in the building industry for many years, the hammer handles you buy are alway to large, so you need to rasp them down and use wedges. Usually the handle is worth more than half a decent hammer, so you just buy a new hammer to save the hassle. The new hammers seem to come with some sort of resin over the wedge.

Tapered sledge eyes taper to center 4° on long axis and 3° on short axis. This is for punches and finished holes.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands
