    Default Sourcingg 40mm OD tube

I am having trouble sourcing a 40mm OD tube with 2.5-3.0mm wall thickness in Melboune. Does anyone have a lead of there I could find these?

    Thanks,
    Trong

Yes and no....I was looking for some thick walled tubing and it is hard to find a supplier. I was directed to Performance Metals in NSW (Performance Metals) who have a good selection. I ended up finding a local (Tullamarine, Melb) supplier Airport Metals (Products) which had what I needed in their Chrome Moly tube section. They will supply short lengths (to the nearest foot...yes, foot). I have attached their current Chrome Moly product list, which does not list 40mm OD tube, although there are some very close to that diameter, with thick wall. Anyway, give them a call, they may have what you want.

40mm is difficult to find as, although the advertised measurements are in millimetres, the sizes are imperial; 38mm & 42mm are easy to find as they are actually 1 1/2" & 1 5/8" respectively (38.1mm & 41.275mm to be exact), just as 25mm = 1", 19mm = 3/4" & so on...

This chart will give you a better idea...

I realise this doesn't help your search but, it does explain why it's so difficult...

AFAIK pipe and tube are still largely imperial sizes and that is unlikely to change. BSP for instance has been tarted up with an ISO number (but it is still BSP) and is the international standard for plumbing fittings, so pipe worldwide is still made to the old BSP sizes.

Only true metric sized tube I've seen here is the supposed swedish replacement for 4130, the guy using it here, brings it in for personal use only and it's more pricey than cro-mo too, with far fewer wall thicknesses.....and 40mm diameter wouldn't be a size he'd use. No idea how critical your job is, Schedule 40 or 80 pipe in 1 1/4" is pretty close and cheap in comparison. If OD is critical - and length is short, you could turn it to size?

I am welding the tube for an old scooter frame that supporting the seat and fuel tank (joining the existing 40mm section). I am guessing around 41mm will be fine and I can "blend" that in . It will be mandrel bend to make a U shape.

That mob I mentioned Airport Metals (Chrome Moly, Aluminium, Stainless Steel & Titanium Supplier Melbourne) lists 41.28 OD with 2.41 wall thickness in chrome moly (4130N). Good strong stuff chrome moly - esp for frames/cages/etc for bikes/cars. Welds and bends well. They sell it in cut lengths to the nearest foot.
PS. I have absolutely nothing to do with Airport Metals - other than being a customer.

Thank you Tony, I didn't need the 40mm anymore but I got 1"x 0.083" wall ChomMoly and hope this bender will work for the same project. The radius is a but tight for what I need but that is all stock I have in hand to make.

I have had success bending 1-5/8 chrome moly. Here is the setup.

The Mandrel. 36.50mm diameter, that gives 0.5 mm clearance to the id of the tube

Top pipe is the support, the bottom is the mandrel.

The die has 3 holes, 45-degree apart so I can possibly bend it to 180

Nice work! The bend looks nearly perfect, and that gauge/size would take a bit of bending force. My bender always seems to crush on the bend a bit - may have to spend some time making a better one. Thanks for the follow up photos. Cheers, Tony

If the pipe dies are loose on the pipe, there will be problems with it. To get around the problem as I didn't have a lathe, was to pack the die with shimming, depending on how much was needed. From memory, I think for 32NB, I used a bit of 1mm galv sheeting
    Hope this helps.

I just made another die for 38mm OD. In the past I used to bore out a square stock to the side I need then split that into 1/2 for the bottom support piece as above.

I am trying something different this time. The diameter of shaft to hold the cutting bit is 20mm. To cut 19mm radius I move the stock until it touches the shaft then back out the cross slide by 9mm from that position then move the cutting bit out to take up that gap.
