Lathe gearbox ,slide oil
Gday all,
I bought a lathe herless. Its a geared gearbox. Its some oil. But she needs alot more. Im going to drain it and put new stuff in it. I had a look and people on forums recommend hydraulic fluid iso 46. Wouldnt it be better to use gearbox oil for cars?
Also is there a particular slide oil that people recommend? Can you use the same gearbox oil? (I guessing maybe not as its 'thicker' viscosity) can you use engine oil?
Cheers,

The important thing is that there is oil there. Too thick and it won't get in. The nice thing about hydraulic oil is that it is relatively free of additives. Car engine oil and gear box oil tend to have all sorts of things in them that you don't need. You will also probably find that the oil does not get up to car like temperatures and so you are paying for things that don't really work (like viscosity modifiers.
I would suggest a hydraulic oil of around the ISO 32 to 46 range as that seems to do most people.

+1 to what Mike suggests, although I've always used iso68 in headstocks, aprons and slideways.

^^^ As has already been suggested above.
Unless the gearbox looks like its leaking badly, just grab a suitable sized container of hydraulic oil from the likes of Supercheap or wherever is convenient for you. Just use the same stuff on the slideways.
In my case I got thinner ISO 10 hydraulic oil for the headstock of my Takisawa lathe as it specified that specific viscosity and I'd noticed that there was small oil cup set up inside to catch splash oil and feed it via a couple of small tubes to specific bearings. I wasn't confident that a heavier oil was going to get splashed around suitably.
It also meant that I ended up buying a 20L drum of ISO68 slideway oil as the ISO10 was too light to use for that purpose.
If I was using 32 or 46 grade I'd just use the same for both.

I bought 4L of iso 46 from supercheap and it seems to do the trick. And Ill use the rest on the slide ways etc.
Cheers guys.
