surface grinder wheels
Where is a good easily contacted source of 7" x 1/2" x 1.250" grinding wheels in Australia?.
Blackwoods only stock a 60 grit alum oxide wheel. They did order me in a 3SG (part ceramic) wheel; but it is out of balance and my adapters do not have the balancing weights attached. Also the Norton range appears very limited since St Gobain took over.
Thomas Warburton have the Kinik range, but as they closed their local branch I would have to drive to the northern Melb suburbs to order the wheels then drive back to pick them up when they are stocked from head office. The other option is to drive to the south side of Dandenong which currently too far for a round trip for me. They don't appear to do mail order.
Forget Amazon; Amazon Australia is a pathetic joke and Amazon US are supplied by Travers Tool Co and "do not ship to Australia". There is nothing on the TTC web site about international postage anymore. Besides the days of reasonable postage costs from the US are long gone.

hi
T Warburton should post the wheels to you, just ring them and order what you need , they are usually helpful.

Any abrasive supplier should be able to source such wheels, you are specifying "tool room wheels"

China,
180mm tool room wheels for a J&S surface grinder.
Locally I am lucky if I have a choice of one which is usually not what of the specs I want.
I have been through this before with the local tool supply for abrasive wheels for my tool & cutter grinder. Ordered about 12 wheels of stated specs. Only about 3 were as specified and the rest were "that's what Norton had". Took them in desperation but only a few have been suitable. Put one alum oxide cup wheel near a piece of HSS and it blues. Too hard, too fine.
I don't want to be caught with a heap of surface grinding wheels not fit for purpose. Shame there is not one wheel that does it all; soft steel, hard steel, cast, non ferrous. Some of the suppliers to industry seem to want to deal in box quantities, not single units.
Morrisman,
That;s where it was handy when they had the Shepparton branch open. I could go in,select what I wanted. They would check stock and they would order it in and pick it up a week later. I will have to try by phone and see how I go.
Abrasiflex only has one correct sized wheel 46 and 60 grit.

3sg was around $95-100 and white aluminium oxide sound $30 from memory. From Blackwoods.

Pete,
That is the choice of one that I have locally. No quibble about the price. Not quite right for intended use. They only stock a middle of the road wheel hopefully trying to cover everything. I have already found on the T&CG that fine, dense wheels just load up and burn the work. Coarser more open wheels cut like the wind with no burning of the work. It does passable work on hard steel but for fine finish could be about 2 grades softer. Probably needs to be coarser grit and harder; and more open structure for soft steel.

Hi Ken, I buy wheels from Travers, and haven't had any problems with shipping. Maybe it's an Amazon restriction?

Hello Raymond.
Thanks for that; you had told me that some time ago; but life or almost the end of it got in the way. If I remember correctly in those days Travers had particulars on their web site for international postage. Their amazon and epay sales ads used to cater for international postage. No mention that I can find on the web site now and the other two sites are postage to the US only.
I have had a play with the Norton 3SG again. Redressed with a new single point diamond dresser that I had. Went to an aggressive stepover (maximum on the machine and just under half wheel width) as well as a 0.002" depth of cut. I didn't think machine had enough power for the recommended 0.005" depth of cut. Too chicken as well. The wheel dress looked good and the finish on D2 was good; but with striation which I put down to balance problems. The wheel surface was still clean, open with no loading.
The wheel dressing was quite savage on the diamond point which may give some credence to Norton's claims of requiring special diamonds for ceramic wheels.
If Taiwan Tools would get their act together with their website without it being offline most times I try to order a new balancing wheel adapter; I can get a replacement. If not; I will forgo the other bits I was going to order and order the adapter from the UK.
