    Default Lathe Spindle Bearing Replacement

    Hallo all

As the title says. I have pulled the spindle out to replace the bearings du to contamination, thing is, I now need to replace all the bearings.

Have a slight problem, have a shaft that needs to be removed that has a bearing, on the end of the shaft was a small grub screw which I have removed, can't figure out how to get that shaft out, there is no threaded hole to place a bolt in to pull, only a turned spot when the shaft was made on a lathe.

    Any suggestions.

One of my lathes had similar arrangements, the AL-300 I think it was, the shaft had to be punched out from the inside, the gears and bushes just slid off as the shaft came out.

It looks like you need to get to the circlip behind the gear then if the hole in the shaft goes all the way through then you could slide a long bolt or allthread through it and pull it out, maybe a bit of tube and a thick washer on the outside for it to pull into?

Thanks Sacc, thats what I am thinking, problem with that there is no corrosponding opening opposite the shaft, strike distance with side of hammer is about 50mm, looking to get a small enerpac ram.

Shed, the hole does not go all the way through, good advice though.

Drill and tap the shaft and use a bolt and spacer or a slide hammer to pull it out?

How about a bolt that fits between the shaft and the casting and with a thread that goes all the way to the head, screw a nut all the way on then a flat washer and a tube
over the bolt, turn the nut against the tube and push the shaft out, if you are suss about the casting being strong enough you could put a suitable packer between the casting and the head of the bolt to spread the load, who knows it might come easy with a bit of a push.

    cheers, shed

Thanks Nev, will give that a go on monday, need to buy a suitable tap and drill bit as there is another plate I cant get off, am going to drill, tap and remove it using the bolts to push against the casing, need a intermediate and bottom tap, which I dont have in the thread size I want to use.

    Hi DD,

Be sure to provide some support for that bearing housing in the middle of the picture, it looks a bit fragile !
