Strange Tool
My neighbour gave me a small box full of rusted toolsteels and a few morse taper sockets and this thing.
All the rusty stuff tidied up fine with the battery charger / washing soda trick.
Picture 5 is what he told me about the tool, I understand the theory but haven't been able to make it work in practice yet, think I need a jammed tool to give it a real test.
Have these things got a name ?
If you want a challenge look at picture 5 last.

That is actually an extremely useful thing, it's a Morse taper ejector tool, used to spring Morse taper tooling from their sockets. This only works on tools that have tangs at the end and sockets that have the through hole. Basically everything accept latge tailstocks.

That's a nice one, good score. I have two different sizes but both are cheap Chinese and are quite thick which prevents them from fitting sometimes. I wouldn't mind having a nice one, because they are handy to use.
Basically you put the double pin in the ejector hole and give the handle a twist. The pins slide in relation to each other and because they taper they expand and eject the Morse taper from the socket.

Another Odd Tool : Centering Tool
Another one rescued from rust.
My neighbour called this a centering tool and assumed that I would know what to do with it.
I've tried but I cannot figure out what it does or how to use it.
The individual pieces in photos 1 and 2 are all slightly tapered so they can all only fit together in the same way every time.
Any thoughts ? When I try googling centre tool lathe / mill I only find the bump tool that uses a bearing.

Hi Bill I think you'll find that a couple of parts are missing, the spring and the centre pin. See attached image for more detail.
Spring loaded centre tool.jpg
It can be used for holding a tap holder in place with pressure, while the chuck is turned. See attached image for more detail.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kryn,
Didnt realise they were so complicated inside .......
I guess the tapers plus the screw on cap always force the hole to be central, so you can change the "collett" piece to accept different diameters. No way of locking the tool in the collett piece so it must be as you say a sliding fit with a spring at the back end.

Kryn,
Will continue to ponder and play with it and if I cannot use it will send it over.

I actually wish my tailstock had an ejector slot, it's a hassle winding the quill back 5 inches for a tool change.

5 inches? Is that what you have to put up with on smaller lathes? I constantly thank my lucky stars that my tailstock has been designed to fit so well with the carriage that I am constantly releasing the tool when I wind it back a bit too far. I see videos where the tasilstock is sticking way out to provide clearance. I guess there are limits to design with smaller lathes. One of the reasons I have yet to fit the cross slide scale for my DRO is because fitting it on the side of the cross will force me to move the tailstock further out when I am using it. Another reason is lack of time. My lathe does have a release slot. It is quick to move the spindle tho. I can spin it back almost from full extension in one go swiping my hand on top of the wheel to spin it. I is weel made. Funny that this is a Chinese lathe.

Nah oldneweng this is a 12 inch center height machine, it's tailstock is odd though, 3" across yet only a MT3 taper, and at full extension when drilling etc you have to wind back seemingly a mile just to eject.
