Default Alternative to grinding on side of wheel ?

Would you ever use these as an alternative to grinding on the flat side of the wheel ? (Which of course we never do anyway.) Am guessing some sort of solid backing plate would be needed.

During some googling this morning I became quite confused regarding what use experienced metalworkers might have for these diamond wheels.

Have tried a few times now to get local Bunnings to "special order" me a white Norton alox cup wheel but they seem to have a lot of difficulty, and after waiting a few weeks offer me a standard grey circular wheel.

Bill, I've had one of those THK 6" diamond wheels on the side of my CBN wheel since 2014.
They do flex so it's supported backed by a 12mm thick steel disc that is is about 75mm in diameter.
    Works great.

We bought a set of about a dozen different grits of these diamond lapidary wheels for SWMBO's jewellery hobby and she has used one for a few hours.

Bill this business had a shop in Dandenong South . They used to have a large range of grinding wheels Thomas Warburton - Abrasives. They will post stuff to you . Not sure if the shop is still there in Dand. Sth anymore it was along the Sth Gippsland Hwy.
