    Hi BaronJ,
Nice work on the clamps, they are coming together quickly.A couple of suggestions for you to consider, on your third jaw face make a smaller shallower "V" groove on one jaw face only at 90 degrees to your current ones, this is very handy for holding small diameter parts/short lengths of thread for grinding. Also do you intend drilling the nut on the end of the all thread for a cross bar. I have never had parts slip in these clamps just the opposite, the clamping pressure can make the "V" grooves leave marks in softer materials.

Hi Bob, Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, a cross groove on one face would be a good idea. I have realised that the first "V" groove that I cut, actually falls below the edge of the clamp frame . I will have to watch out for that in future. I have several long hex nuts that I propose to use on the end of the all thread. I will take a picture and post it of them.

I saw the pictures of yours, that large clamp looks very mean.

I was talking to a guy whilst on holiday about kant clamps and expressing some thoughts that were brought up in an earlier post, about forces involved in using these type of clamp. He was of the opinion that since the pivot point is roughly half way between the ends of the screw used to close the clamp, then the force on the jaws would be equal to the force that could be applied before the thread started to strip. Which makes sense to me.

It also got me thinking about the basic design of the clamp, since moving the pivot point in either direction would alter the ratio of the force that could be applied to the jaws. Making the jaw arms longer would lower the clamping force at the jaw.

Baron, have you seen the Dimide clamp?

Keith Fenner on YouTube did a review on them. 7000lb clamping force, but it was a pretty big clamp. They look easy to make.

    Hi Dean,

No ! I haven't seen that one, but I can see that it shares the same non twist clamping with the Kant clamp. Looks more compact too.

    Thumbs up Almost there !

    Hi Guys,

Almost there ! I got the clamp grips done and acquired a couple of inches of 20 mm diameter brass bar to finish the washers off, the ones that go under the CSK screw heads. I also fixed a long hex nut onto the screw.

I've just got the pins to make for the jaws, and I'm done

    Thanks Guys.

    Hi BaronJ
I am sure you will find these a very handy clamp to use, you certainly have all the options covered on your jaws with the grooves. I noticed that you have not drilled your hex bar for a cross handle, it is a very handy feature to have, it serves two purposes, can be used for light clamping and also enables you to make quick adjustments to the jaw opening/closing by holding the cross bar and swinging the clamp in a circle motion and can be removed all together when working in confined spaces.

    Hi Bob,

Sorry for the slow reply. I / we have been down to Birmingham to see Daughter and No:2 granddaughter for the weekend. Also got to spend a day at the Black Country Museum. (See my BCLM post)

You’re right, I haven't drilled the hex nut I have a spark plug box spanner that is the right size to fit the nut, so I can use that (when I find out where I put it the other day) !
