Hell no. Go to Bunnings and get the small bottles off of them. One-off cost I believe. Bit of a hit up-front but no ongoing rental at all. When I was in Sydney I noticed they were doing Migshield now, too.

Or borrow access for a good bottle of wine from someone who already has the bottles.

I bought an E cylinder for argon and another one for Migshield. Both have already been paid off from rental savings.

As always, depends on how much gas you use.

    Baron, Kryn, PDW. Thanks.

PDW, with the bunnings jobbies, do you mean get their Oxy/propane kit? Or can just the propane be used for brazing with no Oxy?

.. or .. get the H/F bromic kit and use Bunnings refills .. ?

Kryn, I like the idea of an O/A kit about but am not so keen on renting, and don't have the floor space for a 'full kit'. Not amazingly keen on having acetelyne about the house either.

File the broken tooth back and drill and tap for fine pitch screws. Insert them cut them back and file or machine to gear profile. You can also build up over the screws with brazing if you want to make the gear run quieter but the "steel tooth" will do the job and be far stronger than most welding or brazingonly solutions

No, they 'sell' (deposit and swap I believe) acetylene bottles as well. At least they do in Sydney. Those D cylinders plumbers use. I have one but not from Bunnings, I've seen the crates outside the store though.

Oxy-propane might get hot enough, I only use it for cutting thick plate so can't say from personal experience. I use oxy-acetylene as it's a lot hotter so brings things up to temperature quicker. Not like I do a lot of brazing.

I've had an acetylene cylinder around the place for over 30 years. Can't see it's any less safe or more dangerous than the 3 or 4 9kg propane cylinders that's here, or the many litres of diesel. If there's a fire that can't be controlled, time to be somewhere else....

You can braze with Oxy-LPP. I do it sometimes.

I have castiron rods and arc welder if you want to give it a shot yourself? I am in Eastern suburb ( Mount waverley), I have small lathe if you need to clean up and the milling machine + deviding head but not the gear cutting profile...

Trong, thank you. Looks like I might get my hands on some small dbits to cut a dovetailed groove to fit a new tooth in - then file it. Thanks for the offer - I may need it yet, but hopefully this works out. )
