Default From Rail Track to Vice.

I love this idea. I have some track not that large though if anyone wants to make one.

Making of Heavy Duty Steel Bench Vise with Piece of Railtrack

Full YouTube video of the build in the last photo on link.

I have never seen a rail profile like that before. Very thick web.

I thought that also .RC. when I saw it. I'm wondering if it is some other industrial heavy rail rather than train track.

I just checked a bit of railway line I had, the web is only about 15 mm thick.

The foot is a lot thinner as well?

Looked a pretty beefy horizontal borer he used to mill it out. I guess CNC as well.

From the link at post #1.
If you have never used a vise, a standard 8-inch vise costs about the US $150, and if you have access to machining tools, you will be able to make a vice that meets your needs in a lesser amount.

I'd hate to think what that vice cost Raymond Menendez's Boss. There has to be 10 -12+ hours in it. He's EL Metal on Youtube. He's located in Spain. CNC like that has to be 80 Euro per hour.

    Regards Phil.

    Looks like gantry rail.
It does look like a nice trick shot. Except for the position of the threaded bar.

I think its manual. You can just see him spinning handle's for the quill W axis around the 6:32 mark. I'm guessing it's a little TOS

Yes, it looks like that to me. He's set the auto cut to high for the cross hatch on the jaws.

Why do this as quoted earlier " not sure the labour time warrants it though" ?

Probably for the same reason we waste hours making up similar stuff that we could easily buy.

He's obviously no bunny when it comes to machining, and that mill is very very nice.

    Cheers Rob
The worst that can happen is you will fail.
    But at least you tried.

Just for the record, the "not sure the labour times warrants it though" quote wasn't mine. That was Eskimo.

If I was making a point, the original link states.

There is no way known, that that vice got manufactured for $150 USD, given the machinery involved. Only point I was making, and I'm not sure why you were quoting me, but raising a point from a member, Richard in Adelaide.

I love a good foreigner / government job / job that gets done on company equipment, as much as the next bloke. I'm known for it. There's 80ish cubes of iron used for scrapping classes. I've never machined one in-house. I commandeer a good customers CNC.

Not sure what set that off? But you couldn't be further from the truth. I admire those blokes that spend a 1000 hours making a steam engine

Yea you are right. I looked at the full video rather then the minute I looked at previously and noticed it was sped up, that is why I never saw pauses between movements and thought it was a CNC.
