Hafco HM46 Spindle / Quill Wobble
When cutting steel gears on my HM46 Hafco mill the involute gear cutter does not cut continuously - full depth cut at lowest speed - 95 rpm. Several gears were cut with different cutters - Module 1.25 (new set from China), and it was the same. Is the spindle / quill bent or am I using too low a speed? I purchased the mill new and it has not had an arduous life. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Regards,
Alan

They usually won't all cut together.
In order for the cutter to cut uniformly it would have to have the teeth perfectly spaced around the centre hole, be mounted absolutely concentric with the axis of the mandrel and the mandrel axis would have to be spot on concentric to the axis of revolution of the spindle. (not really such a tall ask when I think about it )
You would probably find if you put an indicator on it that the deviation is not really that much and once that tooth wears a little then the next highest tooth will take over and so on. As each tooth is form ground, the tooth profile would be the same. Annoying but just think of it as a fly cutter.

What Micheal said. You'll find exactly the same issue running slitting saws etc. Just the nature of the beast.
The heavier cut you take, the less you notice the effect, but it's always there. It's why I generally hand-feed the start of the cut then once a couple of teeth are cutting, engage the power feed.

Thanks for the replies. I do have the same problem with slitting saws - but don't use them often and had forgotten (nothing to do with age) about this. I had thought about an indicator but thought that checking the spindle would be a waste of time when it was not under any load (from cutting). I shall be able to sleep well tonight!
