    Default Tapering Steel Tube

    G'day
Looking for some one who can put a taper on steel tubing . A friend of mine who is not computer literate has been building Peny Farthings for years and the firm he used to have it done by is no longer around. It would not be a large order and from memory the tube size would be 1 1/2'" to 1" over about 6".

    Thanks Hugh

    Hi Hugh,
I doubt anyone on here would have the tooling to do this sort of thing, it would be someone who specializes in working with tube as the cost of the tooling to do such a thing would possibly run into several thousand dollars. Best bet would be to contact several exhaust places and see what they can come up with.
H and F have tapered former's that are used with a slapper if he wants to do it himself. Hopefully the link below will work.

Sounds like a job for someone who is good at custom exhausts. Cut a tapered slice out of the length of 1 1/2" pipe, close the gap, weld. That is typically how the header pipe for a set of lakes headers is made. Much easier to say than do.

Other than that, some sort of hydraulic former.

Most of the bike tubing would be hydroformed for that application, I can think of someone down Picton way who has quite a bit of experience doing that stuff - at least in larger diameters, but he still might be in gaol.

There is a place here in Adelaide that has a machine for doing this , there bead and butter work used to be for the steel tubed furniture industry( think tapered kitchen table legs), may be worth a look down that avenue ( steel furniture manufacturers) in NSW
