Default Success: McMaster Carr delivery to Oz

    Done. McMaster Carr stuff arrived.

    IMAG1055.jpg

No affiliation, I use myus.com. Smooth as. "Like honey over a peach". No issues at all.

Just pay by CC on McMaster Carr, they shipped to the Florida address provided by myus.com and then myus consolidated that and other shipments into a single box for me.

I'm not totally convinced the shipping is the cheapest possible, but the service is really first rate.

A word of advice: be honest with all values and quantities you enter if they ask. They often ask for proof of the sale - which means a screenshot of ebay details etc. If values / seller details are not provided with the goods they will ask. Be honest otherwise it causes a mess. With this latest shipment, the seller of the oil cups accidentally shipped more to Florida than I bought - there was a difference between the included invoice and the goods. They were okay with the error but wanted proof of the actual sale to make sure everything was okay. Often, they include pics of the goods they receive. Really cool.

I probably do one shipment per quarter so I get a yearly myus.com subscription for about US $60. The subscription means they consolidate shipments. No subscription means each delivery they receive is shipped separately - or at least that was the rules when I signed up. I figure $60 is okay.

The will accumulate goods free of charge for a month before charging $1 per day. That means, from the date they first get some stuff, you have a month of US shopping and ebay sniffing to get stuff into the same box for shipment to Oz.

Remember also the Australian limit on import goods before you hit sales tax. I believe it is $1000 - keep the entire consolidated shipment below that.

Ralph, I have your knobs - "said the actress to the bishop". Bruce, I have your "King recommended" smoothing stone.

Within reason, I am happy to get stuff for forum members if they want it but don't take the p1ss. In future, if I am getting a box together I'll post on this forum so others, if they want, can get some stuff in the same box.

Nicely done Greg. I used to buy regularly from Enco, but they shut up shop to exports too. You've got to wonder about the logic of the US Government sometimes, but let's not go there.

I believe the $1K limit is for the total value of the consignment including freight. The latter is a rort as far as I'm concerned, as that was mostly not an Australian component, and therefore should not attract GST. Too bad, so sad, too hard to differentiate so we'll charge for the whole thing. I buy, errr, "a lot" of stuff from OS, just don't tell my wife. I've rarely been charged when over $1K. However a while ago the Aus Gov put the onus of correct declaration and GST collection on the freight forwarder/freight company, with heavy penalties for non compliance. That's resulted in them all running around like headless chooks making sure the paperwork is perfect before they'll let anything through. The good news however is that Australia Post is about as efficient as any other Gov department, and essentially couldn't give a rats. So the moral of the story is I try to get stuff posted wherever possible.

BTW I would say I have the same "King Recommended" slip stone. As recommended and also imported from the US. Still in one piece remarkably enough

I just tried to order some parts from MCM-C and they turned me down "due to the cost of complying with US govt. regulations" . They said they only dealt with "established customers".
So the myus subscription is in addition to postage?

It is AU$1000 without the freight using the exchange rate on the day the consignment shipped.

Then if over $1000, the total amount including freight is used to calculate value. As the freight is considered a part of the cost of the goods.

Yes. The myus.com subscription entitles you to the one-month free storage with box consolidation. Freight is extra to that. Might be a different offering now, but that was what you got when I signed up a year or so ago.

You also pay whatever freight McM Carr charges to goods to get to Florida, then you pay myus.com freight from there to Oz. McM Carr did charge some freight - I actually made two small orders with them and freight to Florida was about $6 each.

Yes that's correct, sorry I should have been clearer with that. The point is you'll pay tax on the freight component, even though that wasn't generated within Australia (at least the majority isn't).

True Pete, but if one was to buy something in Australia, you pay tax on everything.

The item, the freight to Australia, the docking fees, the markup, the freight to the shop,as all that is incorporated into the final taxable price.

Sure, but all that comes in addition. GST is also paid on the freight component that was accrued on its way to Australia. I've paid it many times and it grates me to be honest. I don't mind paying for something that stays in the country, but not for costs that were accrued when in Germany/China/wherever. I guess the bottom line was it was all too hard to differentiate, so they just lumped the taxing from the moment it leaves the source.

    Hello Ray,

Due to the complexity of U.S. export regulations, McMaster-Carr only accepts orders from our established customers overseas. We will not accept your orders and regret any inconvenience this causes you.

I think they have my ip address or email blacklisted. It doesn't matter what mailing address I specify.

I don't have anything I particularily need just now.
