AL330A Cross Slide Removal Help!
I need to remove the cross slide from my Hafco
AL330A lathe and hoped that some body may have already done this.
I think that I just have to undo the front and rear Gibb screws and remove the Gibb. Then undo the two Hex head screws that secure the Leadscrew nut.
This should allow me to just lift off the cross slide.
There is a small hex set screw between the two Leadscrew nut securing screws and this is what concerns me. I believe it alters Leadscrew backlash but don't know how the adjustment is accomplished.
Has anyone been through this procedure before?
I would be grateful for any tips or advice.
Thanks
Michael

Can you feed the cross slide all the way in until it disengages the leadscrew and slide it off the back in one piece?

remove back sheet metal splash cover (need clearance)
remove gib (if feeling lazy you can even leave the gib in place but it's tighter to move)
wind the cross slide til the nut runs out of thread
slide off the rest of the way and lift it off.
Takes longer to remove the sheet metal guard then to do the rest.
Have done this several times on mine as I remade some compound nuts
Cheers

Thanks for the prompt replies.
I will remove the splash guard and wind the cross slide all the way off.
In the parts list it refers to a "Wedge" that is adjusted/pushed by the little hex set screw. The wedge appears to push apart the split leadscrew nut.
Have you used this to adjust backlash in the cross slide nut?
Wayne, I am curious as to why you needed to remove the cross slide to remake the compound nut. Was the nut on your AL330A worn?
I want to remove the crosss slide to fit a Threading Stop similar to the project
described here..

Thanks again

just back that small screw right off then you can just lift the cross slide off by tilting it on its side, there is a small wedge that goes between the leadscrews, this is for tension/backlash,there are two alan screws on the other side (left) back them off also, make it come out easier, when you put it back together and all in place tighten them back up ,then the tensioning one on the opposite side, then the top tensioning one,its acctually an easy job once you have done it,why are you taking it off ?(did you screw it ll the way out now it wont come back,if so you can put your fingers underneath and position the block again and bobs your uncle
