AL-320G handwheel heights
Can someone please let me know what the centre heights are, from base of lathe for the cross slide and carriage feed handwheels on the AL-320G?

Hi Nev
Don't have that exact lathe so can't help you with the dimensions but most of them are pretty much the same as far as I am aware
Are you planning to buy just the lathe
eg L141 | AL-320G Bench Lathe | For Sale Sydney Brisbane Melbourne Perth | Buy Workshop Equipment & Machinery online at machineryhouse.com.au
or buy with the stand
eg K007A | AL-320G Bench Lathe Package, Includes Stand & Tooling | For Sale Sydney Brisbane Melbourne Perth | Buy Workshop Equipment & Machinery online at machineryhouse.com.au
If your buying one with the base and worried that it's going to be too low, which less be honest unless your a gnome, it's more likely to be too short then too high then you can always make some adjustable feet from big lumps of round stock and raise it up however much you want
If your planning on buying to go on an existing bench then I doubt you will find much height difference between the range. If your worry is that existing bench is too low you could make a setup like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztA-0KSi1FM
If its too high then just make a step box
If you get really stuck and no body on here has one to give you the dimensions call hairy forbes and I'm sure they will take a couple measurements for you if they think they might sell you one, pretty sure they would have one on display.

Was planning on just the lathe. I will build a custom bench as I have quite a bit of heavy angle iron and RHS here. Was at H&F the other day looking and comparing the AL-320G to the Optimum TU-2506V but forgot to measure them while I was there. Like the 38mm spindle bore and hopefully can live without the quick change gearbox. The AL-320G actually looks better than I imagined as far as finish goes and seems quite a bit sturdier than the Optimum. Would like something better, but this is the limit of my budget right now allowing a little extra for some basic tooling to get started. Plan is to buy from a local engineering supply place, as they can sell me one a bit cheaper than H&F. Not sure how that works. Was hoping to build bench over Christmas break and set up where the lathe will go, then get the lathe early next year. If I get the lathe first, then build the bench, I know things will not go to plan and it will end up sitting in the crate.

Here's an idea for a stand with a novel leveling system, works well and is easy to adjust to extremely accurate levels: //metalworkforums.com/f65/t1817...ht=lathe+stand

Hi Nev,
I have an AL320G and built my own stand as the one H&F sell for it was a bit low for me.
I am 5'7" (1700) tall and set the lathe chuck/tailstock centreline at 1215 above floor level.
C/L carriage handwheel is at 955 above floor level..
C/L cross slide wheel is at 1080 above floor level..
Top of base/stand is at 850 above floor level.
Stand measures 1185L x 410W x 850H.
If I was doing it again I would probably set the chuck/tailstock centreline slightly lower at say 1200 above floor level. Otherwise it's pretty well spot on for me.
Regarding making the stand before you have the lathe, you will find that you need the lathe to position the mounting supports and bolt holes in the correct spots.
If you are in Brisbane, I'm down bayside in Birkdale. Happy to show you my setup. Pm me if you are interested.

Managed to find the drawing of my lathe stand for the AL320G.
Knew that I had done one but wasn't sure if I could locate it.
It might be of some assistance.
No responsibility taken for dimensions. They are right for my particular lathe but may not be exact for yours. Check everything before building.

Thanks Alan. I am 5' 7" as well so may start with your dimensions. The house I am in is a highset but underneath is a concrete mess. Nothing is level and all done in patches with cracks everywhere. Sometimes during heavy rain water can come up through the floor. Has happened a few times in the last six years, although not where I plan to put the lathe but you never know. For this reason I will be building an enclosure for the lathe and stand. Pretty much an open front rectangular box (floor, top, sides and back) on top of a steel framed floor, which can be leveled and sit about 100mm above the concrete floor. This will keep everything dry and allow ventilation under the floor if it ever gets wet. Stand for lathe will be bolted to the floor of this. Will probably have a window of sorts in the back above lathe just for ventilation and a fold down section at the front for standing on when using the lathe. If I do it this way, that can be folded up when not using the lathe and just hang a small tarp over the top opening at the front to keep all the dust off when not using it.

Haven't got the lathe yet but getting closer. Have been shopping around to get the lowest price I can. I will probably get a quick change toolpost. If I pay cash and buy with the lathe, I can get quite a good deal. Another question. Anyone have either the QA-140 or QA-150 tool toolpost on a AL-320G? Like the QA-150 in particular. Toolpost - Quick Change Toolpost | For Sale Sydney Brisbane Melbourne Perth | Buy Workshop Equipment & Machinery online at machineryhouse.com.au Also what type of toolpost is this?

Well, there goes my plan to get the lathe soon. Just informed today that there is no money for wages where I work and no idea if the business will survive at all. Going to work tomorrow just to get what work we have there done, just to keep the customers happy for now and see what happens.
