Default Is this really a surface grinder?

    Hi all,

Was looking through ebay this morning and saw this "surface grinder"

I have seen t&c grinders attempted to be sold as SG before so I'm wondering if this really is a SG, although it's probably not a t&c grinder anyway. Unless I have missed something, it seems to be direct drive from the motor, is this a normal practise with some makes for thier SG?

The belt guard has me puzzled too. If it's originally direct drive, where would that (what appears to be a) belt guard go? It all looks original. Also, the wheel is very close to the body, severely limiting the reach of the wheel.

I've seen a very similar machine in a local shop here. They use it for surfacing. I dont think thats the correct wheel for that machine. Looks like the guard is designed to go over the grinding wheel and workpiece. pics 2 & 3 you can see the mounting bolts. With the open end maybe they had an extractor connected to it? Be a bastard to fit the guard and then have to work underneath it to fit the wheel.

    Cheers Phil

In the normal sense, I'm voting NO
I don't have an issue with the direct drive motor, but with the current wheel it has almost no Y travel. (even if the wheel dia is large enough to clear the motor, which I'm not so sure it is, there still isn't much travel before the work hits the column)
The guard looks very wide so maybe its was meant to use a cup wheel and be vertical surface grinder(though a horizontal one lol)
I cant help but think they had something else in mind, but I guess is would grind "a surface", all be it a long narrow one.

Hope someone comes along to clear things up.

I see on the back of the motor there is a dovetail, so does the whole motor move across to give the y axis?

That's my guess. I first thought the handwheel on the left of the motor was for Z but the second last picture shows the Z handwheel is under the table, which doesn't look to good as far as "taking a 1/10th off".

But as ever, if all you have is a bench grinder, it could well be a step forward.

I think this is more of a tool grinder than a surface grinder.
There was a similar machine made by Parkinson at the Carr Gear Auction with a vertical spindle that was for sharpening gear planer cutters (see here about three quarters down in the photos, it was listed as a vertical tool lipping machine: //metalworkforums.com/f282/t199...rrow-june-21-a )

There is a discussion on a similar subject here: Parkson Surface Grinder - Page 2
If you go to post 25, picture number 2 shows what I believe is a very similar machine to the one listed on ebay.
    Cheers,
    Greg.
