HSS Machining
I need to turn the shank of a 22 mm HHS Slot Drill down to 20mm to fit my ER32 20 mm Collet, can this be done successfully with a Carbide cutting tip in the lathe.

Got the square peg in the round hole, now can't get it out !!

Wow that's a "how long is a piece of string"
It would depend on the lathe, the insert and the slot drill.
I wouldn't expect the shank to the hardened(well at least not as hard as the teeth). The two I checked arent. Grab a fine and try it.
Though you can get 22mm ER32 collets I believe.
Edit, couldn't find one on ebay but

This is a pretty open question but if everything goes according to the Mohs scale you should be fine, depending on what kind of power your lathe has and how much you care about your carbide. End mills are probably hardened all the way through so i dont think you will get any relief every cut will be hard work. How are you planning on holding the endmill?

You can turn the end of at least one 20mm slotdrill with HSS*. It "files" the same until well into the start of the flutes.

*cheap slot drill, cheap HSS. I dont have an "good" straight shank slot drills. All my good stuff is charkson, so threaded end, which I would expect to be soft.

The bigger ones I have used the shank is friction welded onto the cutting region. Much like a taper shank drill.
I have turned down larger chinese end mills to fit them in a drill chuck.Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

Hi Shane,
My biggest ER32 collet is 22mm. So my preference would be to buy one rather than attempt to turn down the slot drill shank.Best Regards:

Have only been able to find 22 mm slot drills with 25 mm shafts.

Are you going to try and cut an accurate slot with it or is it just for metal removal.
You can get them with 20 mm shank for under $32.00.

Reasonably accurate if possible, I am going to use it more for squaring up some drilled holes.

Wouldn't that be better suited to a reamer?

The holes that were drilled were not quite square to start with.
