    Default Corrosion on Stainless Steel

    Hi All,

    Just joined here

I have an unexpected problem. I have a stainless steel sink, and in the bowl itself has developed what I can only describe as corrosion. It is dirty white in colour, uniform, and the surface is finely granular.

I tried descalers, Hob Brite, steel wool, steel scourer. Nothing touches it.

Please, can anyone advise how I can remove this layer and end up with a nice finish?

I am more concerned because I am renting this place, and don't want to ruin it!

    Thank you,

    Karsty,
    England.

Any idea what may have caused it? I would think it could be repolished, a very mild abrasive (do they still make Vim?) and perhaps a polishing mop on a drill.
Hopefully someone else will have an idea..

    Hi Russ,

It just seems to be caused by water.

Our water here produces scale, but strangely enough when you measure it's pH it comes up as slightly acid.

I was looking for a scouring powder at or Tesco supermarket, but couldn't find anything.

    Thanks,

    Karsty.

I had a similar problem with a new stainless steel sink in the laundry with what I called "rust". In the deep drawing process, the austenitic structure of 300 series stainless changes to martensitic structure. The test on the sink with a magnet proved that the top area was still non magnetic and the bottom where the deep drawing had done it's work was attracted to the magnet. We now just polish that area every few weeks with gumption paste. Try it and see if it brings back a better surface although you say you have already done some of this.

This is the gumption paste we buy in OZ.

You aren't far from my mate in Copthorne Rd, Croxley Green Karsty.

    Ok, thanks folks.

I have just ordered these sanding mops impregnated with 240 grit - Dome Sanding Mop 3pc Polishing Kit / Drill DSMK-0001 | eBay

I can't get gumption cleaner here in Blighty, but I've just ordered some Vim scouring powder from Amazon.

My drills are in for repair at Makita because they have a wobble (from new, otherwise fantastic drills), so I'll get to work when I get them back.

    Deep drawing stainless steel, eh?

Used the scouring mops for s few minutes, and the result was already a definite improvement.

Just for the record, the Makita drills don't have a wobble, it is an illusion caused by the double cutting edge at the end of the bit!

    Many thanks again,

    Karsty
