Default Brown and Sharpe No 2 surface grinder manual

    Hi all,

Looking for an operator manual for the above machine. I've got a PDF of the parts breakdown from vintage machinery org. Anybody got a PDF? Hoping to avoid the $70 for reprint.

Why? I got a nibble yesterday from a 'wanted' ad I posted on gumtree about a good home looking for an old grinder. So, I am off next weekend to a property north of Melbourne for a look see at a Brown and Sharpe No 2 surface grinder. Unknown whether it is a 2 or 2B.

The good news is it is free. The bad news is it is not all together and some of it has been left outside. I guess we'll just to to wait and see that that means in reality. Hopefully nothing 'too important' has seen the weather and hopefully restorable via electrolysis. And hopefully everything in a box or two. It is a deceased estate so the actual reason it is being apart is unknown. It seems a few other machines there are also in various states of disassembly - so it could just be that it was getting refreshed. Or it could be a total clapped out disaster with a bent spindle ... who knows.

Now, I've never even *touched* a surface grinder let alone know what might be missing from one staring at a box or three of parts (if that is the case) - but I am looking to gen up as much as I can before arrival hence the request for a manual.

The manual should also give an indication as to how they expected it to be lifted. A later B&S manual shows through-holes in the casting for rods to attach chain or straps to. This grinder predates that so I anticipate no through-holes.

    All help and advice appreciated.

    Greg.

PS. I have read the rebuild thread from Greg Q and JHovel. Failing any joy here, if they don't crop up I'll PM them and bug them personally. )

Good luck with your free grinder ....

It might be worthwhile having a look here and asking about a manual.

You're free to ' bug' me. Mine has lifting 'nobs' for slings on the front and cast-in hooks on the back. There are no rolling elemental in the slides, so you can tie the table down for transport.
I have not been able to get a manual either.

Morrisman, Thanks. I've just posted over there.

Joe, thanks also. Especially that it is okay to bug you. ) Funny you know, given how many of these things were sold and their age now, I thought the internet airwaves would be full of tales of rebuilds with photos and lots of hearty discussion between avid fans of the old girl. Strangely, not all that much .... not even so much over on Practical Machinist.

Joe, re moving it, table is okay to strap down, but not to lift by I assume. ?

Correct, Greg. The table is held down only by 9.81Nm of gravity....

The lifting 'nobs' are screwed in to the front of the base. If yours are missing, yell out and I'll send you mine for the move.

Thanks Joe, any change of a pic?

Btw, sniffing around last night I saw you posting on PM about your 'Aldix'. Still going strong?

    Thanks Keith,

I have the 'treatise' one already. Ages ago I saw Mr Pete22 saying it was a must have so I hunted it down ) The other is for a different machine - but thanks anyways!

I understood that yours is roughly the same vintage as mine (30s to 40s). The shape of the front door panel is an obvious difference between older and younger versions.
Here are a couple of pictures of the front 'nobs' and the rear cast 'hook' (circled in red):

    Thanks Joe, much appreciated.

Did you make yours or are they original?

I am not sure of the year of the machine in question. Do you know this specific machine?

A little catching up on questions:
    - The 'Aldix' is still going strong. But I now also have an old Biax... I use both.
    - The lifting 'nobs' on mine are the originals. They were offered as a loan
    - No, I don't know your machine but I deducted that from your earlier posts about it. Have you decided yet and have you taken any photos yet?
    Cheers, Joe

Thanks Joe, I understood you meant a loan - no problems. ) Re the Aldix. Sounds like a project one day. )

Re the machine and photos. I've not actually seen it yet, nor does the owner have photos. Got the call last weekend and he isn't heading out to the property where it lives until Sunday - so I'll visit it then. The request for a manual was to gen up on it to help identify if any parts are missing, or still under a tree out the back ...

Heh heh. My mother is flying in and will be here on Sunday ... which is her Birthday. "Hey mum, say ... let's go on a drive for your birthday. Why am I hooking a trailer up? .. oh that's nothing, just to make sure the wheel bearings get a run every now and then. And why an engine lift? Oh don't worry about that ...."

    Default Whew - basket case?

I went out to see the BS2 today and, whew, if this one goes ahead this one is going to be a long term project and not an easy one. Well, it might be short term, so I'll try to find out whether I am wasting my time as soon as I can but ... the body and table has been stored inside but every other part, including every nut and bolt has sat outside in the rain for about ten years.

I don't even know if I have all parts.

    IMAG0111[1].jpgIMAG0112[1].jpg

It has "basket case" written all over it, except for the following: to my eyes the 'stored-inside' ways had practically no wear at all - they looked really good. All gears, despite the corrosion, looked pretty unworn - through the corrosion. It is all a bit crap, but despite it being in bad condition it might actually be in good condition .. if you know what I mean.

Oh, the spindle (stored inside) is seized tight.

I've not got a good shot of the ways, but I'll endeavour to do so over the coming days. I reckon to get this old girl on her feet again I might need all help I can get!

Here is the carriage as it drys out. It actually had a layer of grass growing over it. As I was scratching in the grass looking at stuff it was like "what it this under here .. oh god, it is the carriage!"

    IMAG0129[1].jpg

The clutch assembly is a misery and totally seized. As a test to gauge the crap-ness and seized-ness of parts I put it in an electrolysis bath tonight.

    "Only time will tell".

I hope they paid you to take it away Greg, or at least not paid too much for it. As you say "It's a basket case", will that be a 20 year restoration project??
