    Default HyLo vice

I needed a decent vice for my Bridgeport and this came up cheap on ebay (because it was filthy) but had only been doing plastics work so its pretty solid. Its really nicely made and doesn't have many apprentice holes the mill finish on the bottom face is a bit rough though.

I was wondering if anyone had bought one of these new when they were available or knew what the original parallelism/flatness specs were, as when i really gronk down on something in it it does seem to lift a small amount. Nothing a dead-blow can't solve I guess.

If it's lifting a little, I'd look at putting in some grub screws with lock nuts and a gib strip, easily adjustable to correct any lifting. To check for parallelism put in a couple of pieces of ground rod in the dovetails and check with a Micrometer. When you have it set up under the mill, check it with a set of feeler gauges under a piece of bar fitted to the mill. Taking a fine cut off the faces on the vise will correct any faults also, NOT the jaws though. Had to do these checks on a drill vise I got with the minimill. These checks will soon tell if there is any discrepancies.

I have one also, but mine is a 12" and weighs in at a modest 85kg or so... But I can tell you that I have found no noticeable lift when "GRONKING" And from memory fit and finish on top as well as underneath was pretty good. Due to her size I don't flip her over too often. lol

    Default another HyLo vice problem

Hello fellow HyLo vice owners, I was maybe lucky?? to pick up what I think is a 6" vice. Obviously been used on a drill press as it has a bad case of borers. When I got it the previous owner had stripped it down to restore it and didn't get any further. As far as I can determine all the parts are there but I am a bit puzzled as to the role / purpose of the large brass bushing and spring on the handle end. I would like to restore it to original but if that fails I can modify it to a conventional machine vice.
So is the spring there to return the brass piece to its start position if you use it to quickly open the jaws. Hoping someone who has one of these apart can assist me in explaining how the brass bushing relates to the use of the vice as I have not come across one of these before. Thanks in advance, cheers Ian alias hpa1

Caskwarrior, I can't answer your questions regarding original specifications but I can say that these are very good milling vices, I have 2 of them. The one that I use the most does have a small amount of jaw lift when tightening, maybe .001", but a few taps with a soft face hammer takes care of that.
The parallelism of the jaws is perfect although I have made new hardened and ground ones out of a 1/2" thick tool steel.
I have also had new springs made because they were broken when I first got the vices maybe 20 years ago.
The screw/nut mechanism is a great application of the "Differential Thread"

I think the really clever part is "turning it on and off"

Hello Spieker, the spring is missing from your vice, it will not work without it. The spring is the weakest link in the design of this type of vice.
