L-00 spindle spanner
Question for those with the old U.S. standard L-00 , L-0 and larger spindle nuts .
What do you use to undo the nut ? A C spanner or hook spanner is needed but a large sized one is not easy to find. A guy in the US makes these spanners but the freight is a killer, US $70+ . He cuts them out of high tensile 1/2" plate .

What size diameter are you talking Mike? I use an adjustable (originally sold for doing motorcycle shocks) on my ER40 collet nut, so there may be other non-obvious sources out there.

Hi
Yes I spotted the motorbike shock spanners but they are not big enough.
I measured the centre of the L-00 spindle nut and it is 4.5" diameter . There is a plain section in the middle of the nut perimeter where the spanner locates and some knurling on either side of the plain bit . There are six notches around the circumference of the nut, for the spanner to locate.

Lots bigger than that...

I'd just make a spanner myself, it'd be quicker than asking about something so simple.
There's a very nice P-B collet chuck with a L-00 spindle mount I keep here as a reminder to not be so enthusiastic in buying stuff that won't fit any of my lathes. The damn thing is way too hard for me to want to machine it. I keep thinking of making an adaptor up but I can buy a D1-6 mount chuck at a reasonable price so there's no incentive. Makes a lovely door stop anyway.

I guessed it would be but how big was the important question. Our workshop have cut C spanners of around that size from flat plate. Another option is perhaps hydraulic equipment servicing places as that is a size sometimes used on injection moulding machines and earthmoving equipment.
I agree with Peter though and would just look at making one. I can see them in the US for between US$42 (adjustable) up to around US$75 for a fixed one and freight would probably be another US$30 to US$40 - that's a lot of plate.

G'day Mike,
I reckon you could knock one up from some 1" x 0.25" flat black iron.
Cut a section to the required dimensions for the key, drill and tap it with an appropriate thread and bolt to the end of a longer piece (or just welding it on might be easier and stronger)
Bend to the required shape and weld on a brace.Maybe add a half twist to the handle under the brace to reduce the chances of the handle bending beyond the brace.
Cut to length and add preferred handle.
Sort of like this (I couldn't draw the twist):

Cheers,
Greg.

Hello Mike,
The wonderful Schaublin No.36 vice Michael procured for me required a largish C spanner for locking the rotatable jaws. I looked high and low and eventually found a spanner here - C Spanner Hook Wrench w Pin Slotted Roller Bearing Nut Option 58 115mm | eBay Good quality and what I would call a pretty reasonable price.
Might do for your chuck.
Bob.

C tool
The C Tool arrived OK.
Lucky for me the large nut on the L-00 spindle has come undone easily . The tapered surface on the spindle itself is OK, it has some light pitting marks but it is smooth and serviceable . The chuck is not so good, the L-00 taper surface on the back plate is rusty and has some dings in it . The other chuck isn't much better . I might have to look into buying some L-00 back plates . I would hate to damage the spindle taper, using damaged back plates on it isn't a good idea..

For future reference and for others: an eBay search like this
adjustable C-spanner | eBay
brings up lots of adjustable hook and pin spanners. I've bought a few for the various nuts I Have on machines and motorbikes. Even though some look to be of dubious quality, I've not bent or broken any - yet.Cheers, Joe
