Default How To Remove Old Silastic, Etc.

How do you remove old Silastic from bathroom tiles.
Is there any tip, tricks etc.

Also what can I use to fill in the old door jamb strike plate hole?
My door jambs are metal. This is the metal work Question.

Concentrated acetic acid is solvent for silastic but don't bother trying regular vinegar as it doesn't seem to touch it.
It will also readily dissolve galv so it may not be appropriate for your door frame.
If you can get hold of conc acetic acid be careful with it as it is sticky like jam and you might think you have removed it from skin but the burns don't show up for some time afterwards.
Make sure you read the MSDS for it.

There is a commercially available silicon remover, I believe Bunnings stock it.

Petrol or kero will work on many types of silastic - but it can take a few hours/overnight for it to do its job.

I have had success using mineral turps to remove old silicone sealant on fibreglass and perspex, followed by a final clean with Shellite.

I presume that your suggestion is in jest, and you meant using the match after Master Splinters method of using petrol to soften the silastic. For the record, silastic will take quite high temperatures, much higher than a match alone could provide. The addition of petrol vapour however provides a whole range of additional possibilities.

Put it in the furnace at 700C, burns off polystyrene completely. Should do the same for Silicone. Doesn't do much for timber though.
