    Default Pre-relieving cutting edges

Invariably when I make a cutting tool I create the cutting edge and then spend time carefully trying to relieve the edge without damaging it.

I needed a 35° inc angle reamer, this time I got a bit smarter, cut the reliefs first and then cut the flutes.

This is a piece of 20mm 1020, I've put 6 flats on it much like sharpening a pencil.

I've turned the job 30° in the collet block and cut the flutes.

Harden with cherry red hardening powder.

The reamer works well, the surface finish is OK for what the part needs to do.

Are you sure that it is 1020? I am surprised that it cut that well as 1020 has only around .2% carbon and is generally not suitable for flame hardening.

    Techo.

Bob's the Australian agent for Cherry Red. A case hardening powder. He mentioned it between the 2nd & 3rd picture.

He left some sample pots down here, when he was here last. I still have 3 left. Sing out if you want to try it.

    Regards Phil.

I have had great results using "Cherry Red"
Even on crappy mild steel you can get a surprisingly hard surface. I highly recommend the stuff.

Yes Phil, I missed the fact that he was referring to the Cherry Red product, I thought it was a reference to the hardening temperature/colour. I have never used any of the case hardening powders so I might take you up on the offer of a sample pot.

Whats funny is cherry red is a misnomer, at least these days. Back when the phrase was coined the cherries were far lighter than they are today.

Nice work by the way Bob, i have used my cherry red a few times and it's great.

    Techo.

    Your mail box is full.
Techo1 has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space.
I barely read that and thought it was me. If you get two messages, largely saying the same thing but drafted different, thats why.

    Regards Phil.

(on edit) And if you don't get any, ping me with an email. Its in my profile

I suspect there's a Cherry Red / Dumpling lunch for the North West contingent tomorrow.

Thanks for the youtube clip Bob, looks like a good product. What is the price for a small container and can it be posted through Australia Post?

Being an out of towner means I'll probably have to take my chances on eBay - Cherry RED DIY Surface Harding Powder 400gm 14 Ounces | eBay

(The stuff looks far more promising than the Kasenite that's eaten its way through the tin container I bought it in about twelve years ago.)

    Only one size available.

How long would 400gms last, or I should say, would 400gms last me as long as I am thinking it will?

I think I will look into it and maybe get some.
