Question Small Quantities Steel Supplier - Brisbane, Ipswich or Caboolture ???

    Greetings,

I'm looking to buy a small quantity of 10mm square Mild Steel (or maybe some sort of stainless steel) bar stock to make some carbide tipped Woodturning Tools. A one meter length will give me enough bar stock to make three x approx 300mm long tools. I've got the carbide woodturning cutters on the way from the USA.

    Question 1:

I'm looking for a steel supplier in South East Queensland who will supply the small quantity of mild steel that I need. The two places I rang today said that they only sell in minimum orders sizes of $100.

So - does anyone know of a supplier in SEQ that happily sells small quantities ?

    Question 2:

I have been considering using some sort of stainless steel (instead of mild steel) for these tools, mainly due to the nasty rust problems I get in this climate. A friend suggest that "stainless" might be too brittle. Is stainless steel to brittle to use in Woodturning Tools ?

As I need to drill and tap the material, I also need to be sure that if I use Stainless Steel, that it will be soft enough to drill and tap.

I'll be grinding the cutting the tool end of the bar stock to take the carbide insert, as well as drilling 5/32" and tapping to take a 10/24 screw. The handle end of the barstock will ground to form a tang to go into a wooden handle.

If stainless steel is feasible for this job, I'll also need to find a supplier for small quantities.

    All advice greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

I just tried to PM you but got the following
"RoyG has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space."
I have some offcuts of 10 mm square you are welcome to. I have 3 pieces 600mm long but there is probably more if I look a bit harder.
We just need to work out how to get them to you if you are interested.
    I live in Bald Hills.

I will be buying from Bohler at Wacol in the next week or three. If you are happy with 1214 mild steel I can add your 10 x 10 to my order to get you around the minimum purchase hurdle if that helps. Small sections they only sell by the (6m?) length, if you don't want it all I'd take half, it gets cut in half for the ute.

Try a bearing/industrial parts supplier for key steel. Comes in various sized 300mm or so long.

Well ..... thanks for all the suggestions. I should do all right from one of those options.

I notice that nobody mentioned stainless steel in the responses - I gather that's because the idea isn't feasible. So, I guess I'll use mild steel.

    Thanks,

Nothing wrong with using stainless. Depending on the grade it can be a bit harder to drill and tap, but other than that, and perhaps a bit more expensive, no real reason not to use it.

10mm round bar 304 stainless is $9.15 per meter.

RoyG, there's an engineering shop in Toogoolahwah. Why don't you try him for some off-cuts.
