    Default Wad Punch Question

    I have a set like this -

    https://www.maunindustries.com/wad-punch-kit/

It's needs a little TLC so I would like to dismantle it if I can. Anyone know if the pin and spring can be removed and how?

Hi Nev. The collar around the spring loaded pin should unscrew, it may require a pair of vise grips and a vise to hold them. If you don't want them marked, leather strap wrench should work also.

I have one that is similar but not that brand .

If the construction is the same it is as follows:

Once the punch is removed, the thread on the body that the punch screws onto has a 4mm or so grub screw tapped through to engage a groove in the center pin. Once the grub screw is backed out, the center pin will slide out.

The handle, knurled collar and thread seem to be one piece. No grub screw of any sort. If you look at the first pic in the link I posted, you may be able to see what appears to be a section inside where it is threaded, that looks like there may be a join but nothing to suggest how to remove it. Maybe it's pressed in?

The vice grips may be the last resort. The leather is preferable bit not always handy. I have used multi layers of broken linisher belt under the grips.
It hangs onto the metal and stops marring from the vice grips.

May be a little bit of heat if its a press fit or maybe loctited?

    Hiya Nev,

    Thank you for your question.

The collar that holds the plunger and spring in place is pressed into the handle and therefore unfortunately this cannot be replaced without being damaged.

If you would like further help or information regarding our Wad Punch Kit please contact; [email protected] or alternatively call +44(0)1623 554599 and we will be able to help further.

    Kindest Regards,

I have one of these exact same brand, case and set and can confirm that the knurled part unscrews from the main body

Haven't used mine for about a year or so but will dig it out tomorrow and double check.

I do know that the pin and spring is out of it, as the last time I used it, I wanted a round plug without the pin hole
    Cheers

I received a PM directly from Maun Industries. Bit of a surprise and great customer service on their part as I did not contact them directly. The collar is pressed into the body and removal will probably result in damage. May buy a new handle in the near future, then attempt to dismantle this one.
