Lathe felt
I am doing a cleanup and refurb on my Lantain Lathe, now 37 years old! One of the things that I would like to do is replace the felt wipers on the carriage. Does anyone know what sort of felt should go there and where I might be able to get some?
Thanks
Ian

You can buy the felt in different size square profile at most bearing companies. They use the same felt in self aligning bearing blocks.

Is the quality of the felt important for wipers? I went to Spotlight and got some heavy duty felt of the correct thickness and cut the wipers for my Hercus ARM by hand.
Is it going to explode? They only wipe oil on the ways...

I'm pretty sure I can recall Steamwispherer Phil, mentioning buying felt from Spotlight, for some thing they do at Sovereign hill.
If they look and seem to be doing the job, it must be right.
Regards Phil.

If you have an old Akubra hat... its excellent very high density felt and cuts easily without fraying out. You have to cut 3 or 4 pieces and double them up to the required thickness. Use a punch if it needs holes for mounting. Spotlight has some thick felt too, but its a much less dense quality that tends to fray out when cutting. It still works as wiper when compressed by the mounting plate. If you need a small amount of about 5mm thick, high quality dense felt try a filter insert for Stihl wipper snippers - cheaper than to buy industrial felt sold by the meter.

I've always had it that you need the type A engineered hard felt, for wipers. No idea where I got that from. Folklore probably. It just hangs in my mind.

Isn't there the possibility of some of the synthetic felts picked up at spotlight etc breaking down in contact with the oil??
Proper machine felt and natural fibre felt would be impervious.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands
