Default Up Grade from the Scrap?? Metal Engineering Works.

Well its game on Boys and Girls,an old army adage along with another ''brown stuff always runs down hill'' and if you throw enough ''brown stuff'' some of it sticks.
Firstly sincere and grateful thanks to those who supported with funds and kind words of support.
It is one and a half weeks now since the barriers went up all round, a real ''fashion statement'' by the local Shire considered by many here as a bit of an overkill.
All of a sudden it is in the eyes of public safety, that this 70 yo icon becomes along with its owner a beaming pariah.A slash of the CEO's pen I all it has taken,to ''clear fell'' a Heritage listed former ''sweat shop'' clothing factory employing in its peak 48 local women and girls.
Since its demise as a factory ,it has been used as a storage facility, planned assembly and outlet for Morgan Sports Cars,a man cave and hideaway for an 85 yo automobile engineer's car collection, away from his wife's eyes,a stock feed hay and grain store and then by me past 30 yrs.
A pioneer of warehouse living before it became fashionable/desirable of inner city Melbourne dwellers in the early 90's.
Since then it has been a home, workplace and depot for me.A living working museum of ''old scrap'' still earning their keep long before me and after my demise. They never went hard enough to wear out,a time when time it self had a different value. In fact 1 lathe here contained features 20yrs ahead of its opponents. It was made circa WW1 era, costing as much as a house[big] in any luxury suburb in a capital city.So well made and robust their cost sent them to the ''wall'' in 15 yrs.
Moving along,4yrs ago during a violent storm here a top chord of a triangular saw tooth roof truss broke imploding some of the roof section down on top of items underneath.I was away overseas at the time.
As in these situations, friends rallied and called upon SES to tarp over the damage. As in all emergency agencies first duty of care,is to asses the risks before deploying his team.Roofing material was found to be the fibro cement containing low risk non friable that A word.A product used in buildings until its total banning in1983.
The local council building staff attended and issued an immediate Emergency Building Order requiring fencing an mitigation measures ie propping.Immediate measures were done remainder done by me 10 days later.
Since then I have been rebuilding. The salvage alone took me some months to do because of the sensitive gear trapped under.
This has been a work in progress, all this time it has been a solo effort to reverse engineer the truss, support beam under and walls.Due to the age of the building replacing framing as it goes along. Before re erecting 3or4 things have to be done before another item goes back up.
In October last year 2014 I received a new building order to demolish leaving only the brick façade suitably propped to main st.
This was to be done by early Jan 2015 or an alternate option to continue works as had been going on previously.Notification back to council by same day opting for the extended time start by 9 Mar 2015 to 9 Mar 2016. This was done via email to Shire. A response email saying it was received by Shire and it would be forwarded to relevant dept.
Knowing that correspondence [electronic and post] goes missing from time to time,a copy was also sent to my wife overseas.
    Work continued normally as before.
On1 April[how ironic]Build Inspector and an Engineer hired by the Shire inspected building and left.
At the time I questioned as to why this inspection was being done. That an email had been sent seeking and opting for the non demolition option. They stated that NO email in relation to this was received hence this visit.
It is now June.Up till June I was asking where is this report.Answer its on its way.

On June 9 I was requested to attend a meeting with dep CEO, Planning Officer,BuildingSurveyor and Chaired by my local councilor .
At this meeting I was given a copy of the Engineers Report with a finding in his opinion, that factory be demolished.
No Order was handed to me no notice of eviction and no notice of barricading.I was given verbal advice at my expense demolition be 150 thousand dollars.Asking about contents was stated to be removed by contractor.Local police were told I had no access not even to a biro. After my devastating meeting neighbors were served barricade notices
On thur 11 8am barricades went up all round even land locking my car

So here we are, a basket case shattered with a dash of a pen no family to fall back on our dear miss emma from qld steps up to the plate. All the hands went up sadly no one can enter had he short time frame been longer things could have happened at this stage ad no where to put gear Should this out side help worked out Emma had forwarded her C Card details for local shop to arrange catering for you lovely people I had no knowledge of this till yesterday.
To the people who lauded her a big thank you 1 day when we meet 1-1 my personal thanks here will have to do.
To the rest what can I say
As for shipping containers is not an option better chance greased up in the open
True bullies when bloke is down on is luck is most cowardly bordering on libel.

Well from the horses mouth this is about as true and correct as I can say, as some here made scathing remarks about emma and my wife what can I say you lack deep empathy.

All I can say our Local council are trying as well as local mp are going hard to stop the excavators.

Those who choose to is a Face book page Save Old Givoni Mill.
At this time is all I know Will update when know more Cheers for now John

    G'day John,
Interesting pics, looks like the head from a Toyota 1300 4KC engine.
Is that a fly cutter made from a fly wheel?
What does that rear wheel in the first photo belong to?
    Cheers,
    Greg.

I think it is an early big port head with welsh plug rather than a cover plate at the rear of the head?

Looks like a B/port J head mounted on a horizontal mill overarm.

Only comment I have is, I'm really glad it's not *my* B/port head. The R8 taper really, really isn't meant to swing anything that size/mass. OK - I guess - for a single point fly cutter type tool tip making a skim cut, but nobody should have the idea that this is a good idea for actually removing serious metal.

I'm about to do the same thing for either my horizontal mill or my HBM, seeing as I 'won' a J head in the last Grays auction.

Doesn't matter does it its a scrap metal machine that was made over 80 yrs ago.Is a Denbigh. J head is scrap metal, the holden flywheel is scrap metal. Funny how every one has an opinion,a learned 1 at that with the usual putdowns you are good at
35yrs its been doing that hundreds been done FYI is No2 Morse taper. It has earned its keep 1000 fold Set up been copied here by many.
A 10 dollar flywheel bit of 3'' bar 1bit HSS set screw 1st head put a cool 60 bucks in your coffers
At the end of the day if you haven't done it don't drop wise cracks

The bar was turned up on a scrap metal 54''bed 5''Atlas lathe 75 yrs old still working amazing these ''old dung heap'' clunkers .JA

Thank you linesmen, thank you ball boys, that's all folks.

J.ashburn, you have now stated your case and given us some background. As this matter has resulted in a certain amount of acrimony on this forum we think it might be best if you continued your case on the above mentioned Facebook page.

It doesn't belong in the Metalwork Forum and given the recent acrimony and added sarcasm here, it doesn't belong on the Woodwork Forum.
