Turning a taper won't work if you want to keep in spec and Warragul dies cut straight anyway. The taper doesn't have to be on both.
    A conundrum

Thanks to all the good suggestions, I now have the BSP taps and dies ( parallel ) for the sizes I want, and I can use off the shelf 1/8 BSPT tapered female fittings for one half, the male side will be parallel not tapered.

So what are the rules for mating up parallel and tapered pipe fittings? I guess you get a better gas tight seal with both tapered male and female, but what about parallel male tapered female? Is that better than tapered male parallel female?

I had always wondered if you can cut a male tapered thread by setting the TS to the correct taper, turn B/T centres and then single point thread while B/T centres? I thought of that a while back but never had to do it as I bought a die. 1/8"BSP would not leave much room though.... Simon
Girl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

If they leak, then you get the 48 inch stilsons out..

But seriously, thread sealants can work wonders... Loctite make a liquid thread sealant that works really well on high pressure applications..

    Hi Ray
If joining two bits of pipe the socket is parallel female while the pipe is tapered. The same putting a pipe or a nipple into a valve, the valve is parallel and the nipple or pipe is tapered.
I don't think I have ever put two tapered threads together.
In fact I've never seen a female tapered thread which isn't saying much.
Anyways, one is normally tapered and the other is parallel...normally.
Oh yeah, not sure if this means anything but our rule of thumb on a pressure vessel is at least 4 threads of engagement.

I once fusion welded 2 brass pipe fittings together to stop them leaking - it was Sunday afternoon. Then I sold the house to a plumber. Got lots of joy over the years thinking on his reaction when he'd figured out what I'd done......

WRT pipe dope, yeah. I have tubes of Loctite 5331 and 732 (I think) for plastic and metal pipe fittings below the waterline in my boat. They do not leak if you do even a half-arsed job with the fittings.
