Default Replace Tapered Bearings on an Advance Lathe with Angular Contact?

I've been thinking about replacing the Tapered Headstock Bearings on an Advance Lathe with Angular Contact? Why you might ask. Well it's just a thought I had so is it a good idea or not? Original bearings are a 25 x 52 Tapered which I believe are 16.25 wide whereas the Angular Contact are 15mm wide but I can get away with this with a 1.25mm spacer where needed I think. I am doing other mods to the lathe slowly as I get time. It all may work out in the end, or it may not, but at least I am having some fun trying to make it work.

I will also need someone to make a new spindle at sometime so is anyone interested in giving this a go? I can post (or PM) details about this if anyone is interested.

Any reason to try angular contact bearings? It will complicate installation as they are single piece bearings... There was a thread on another forum where a local tried to put angular contacts into an AL960 lathe... a set of $500 bearings were stuffed in the process...

Surprised such an older lathe has metric tapered rollers in there and not imperial, as tapered rollers were mostly imperial as they were invented in the US.. And AU made/designed machines of that vintage loved using imperial bearings especially odd sized UK made ones..

Making a spindle would have it's own challenges to face depending on what you want... Ideally it would be hardened, then ground.. making precision bearing surfaces for the rolling element would require grinding and precision measuring as the rolling element needs to be a light press fit (the housing as it is stationary can get away with a more loose fit), although these days we have loctite

On top of that depending on what precision you want, the adjusting nut thread on the spindle would ideally be thread ground to make sure it is dead square and thus the adjusting nut tightens everything up square..

Everything depends on what you want the final outcome to be... I am sure spindles have been made carefully in the home shop on lathes before and satisfactory results have been got from that...

Lathe spindles that use angular contact bearings usually have a minimum of three bearings at the front and two at the rear.
And they would be precision bearings that have a shallower contact angle than a non precision angular contact bearings.
Non precision angular contact bearings are not as stiff radially as precision bearings as the contact angle is greater.
An angular contact bearing compared with the same size tapered roller bearing would have less balls than the tapered bearing has rollers and therefore not be nearly as stiff and stiffness is everything with machine tools.
For this reason I would advise against changing what you have.

Thanks for the replies. Yes the Advance has metric bearings in the headstock. The spindle I still want to get a new one made sometime, as it's a little rough and worn. Also may want a different thread on the spindle nose rather than the what I believe is an odd 1 /14" x 10 TPI. Thread is also too short for the chuck backplate that it came with. Only threads into the backplate about half way. Not sure what is going on there.

After some thought and reading the previous post, I am going to stick with the original tapered bearings. Got enough to do on this lathe without complicating things.
