Recommendation for road freight Adelaide-Melbourne
I have been looking a long time for a small shaper. Pulled out of bidding more than once. Now I bought a Douglas 10.5" from Adelaide. I am probably not the first looking how best to transport a 200kg pallet from Adelaide to Melbourne. I could pick it up with my box trailer, but its an overnight trip and I cannot do that for personal reasons. A possibility would be to have it picked up and dropped off at a Melbourne depot. Can anyone recommend a road freight company that would take good care of my new shaper?

Chris, it may be worth while asking removals companies if they could do it as a backload, or just a small addition to a "front load". I had Toll Shipping bring my shaper from Melbourne to Tasmania, and was not impressed with the lack of care taken during the shipping operation. The downfeed handwheel was broken I imagine because they threw other stuff on top of my palletised load, breaking the bakelite handwheel. Also the fan cover on the TEFC motor was badly bent by what appeared to be fork tine damage. They obviously employ people who don't give a damn about other folks property, and the only way I can think to protect your gear would be to fully enclose it with stout timber, ply or chip board of adequate strength to keep their neanderthal operators away from any delicate equipment. Good luck,
Rob

My lathe (a Hercus 260) came from Adelaide with Kitco Transport depot to depot and even though it over hung the pallet it made the trip fine.
To a degree it depends on the person you bought your shaper from as presumably they will need to drop it off at the depot in Adelaide so how far they are willing to travel may limit your options.
I used another company to send a mill to Perth and they did a good job but for the life of me I can't remember their name.
Good luck with the move however it goes down.
Cheers,
Greg.

E-go are very reasonable with their prices, I have used them well over 50 times now and absolutely never had a problem.

To reduce the possibility of damage it would help to ask the sender to prepare the machine by removing vulnerable bits (such as the tool slide handle - or possibly the whole tool slide) and pack these in a box with any loose parts, toolbits etc. Get them to lash the box securely to the machine. With a Douglas the 'chookhouse' belt guards might take a beating, but probably easy enough to reshape afterwards.
Cheers,
Bill

Thanks everybody, all useful hints. It turns out the seller is actually in the Barossa Valley. He can take the bulky/fragile bits off and pack separately, strap the shaper to a pallet, and deliver free to Nuriootpa traders in Nuriootpa. They only deliver wine interstate . But for under $50 will bring my shaper to any other warehouse in Adelaide. I will get calling around Monday to see what can be done from there. Not as easy as I hoped.
Have a good Anzac Day today.

Well done
I have sent you a pm with a number you could try, they run between Adelaide and Melbourne.
I was hoping someone from here bought that little Shaper so we can hear about what happens to it.
