    Default Tap grinding attachment.

    Hello from BC.
The grinding attachment is a form relief grinder, radial relief only. I have 1 the same and had to make a base plate. The cam pushes on a rod that pivots the body away from the wheel. the amount of push is adjusted by the knurled chromed knob. The tap is held between centers, then the tap holder is timed to the cam and locked with the second clamp screw. Takes a bit of head scratching to find out how it goes together. The slotted base is used to set the tap lead taper. I was a bit worried about the tap being drawn into the wheel as it is ground but after using it I found it well designed and the results really good. Hope you have a good set of cams, mine is missing only the 8 lobe version which I will copy the profile from the 7 lobe unit.
    Regards

The jig is for grinding a shaft, it can be either straight or taper. The jig allows for the taper angle to be set as one end has adjustment for that.
    Previous owner here.

The centre on the right hand end is fixed (in the centre). The sliding dovetail moves the V block (so the square end of a tap can be held tightly on centre?). Currently there is a 3 lobed cam installed adjacent to the rotating knob on the right hand end. This cam can be removed (and replaced with a 4 lobed cam? etc). The cam pivots the whole work assembly a small amount (away from the grinding wheel?) as you rotate to the next lobe. The amount of rotation can be adjusted with the closest knob visible in the base assembly

    Steamloco1954,
Thanks for the info. The device only came with one cam. Would it be possible for you to photograph some of your cams? I assume they are all the same diameter, but the lobes must change from the 3 lobe to - say - the 6 lobe version to fit them on.

    Thanks, Jon

    Default tap grinder

    Hello John.

My camera isn't good up close. You reverse the cam for left hand taps. 1 thumbscrew on the head locks the tap in place. The other, when loosened, allows the head to spin on the shaft so you can time the tap to the cam.
