Compared with the Kopp variator, a VFD would indeed give less torque at the lower speeds within each speed range, and a reduced range of usable speeds. The Kopp is good for 9:1, and with the two speed options in the headstock the Chipmaster's speed range of 35-3000rpm.

This is why I've not ditched the variator from mine. You need to install a countershaft with a 2:1 ratio to get the torque multiplication you'll lose by running a VFD at low frequencies. OK this isn't the end of the world having a belt to shift every so often but it's still a PITA if the variator works well enough.

One day maybe I'll do it but it'll be with a 5HP motor if I can get one to fit in the space. Or I'll just buy a 10EE.

With my Chipmaster, I found the loss of torque with a 1440rpm (4 pole) motor below 50hz to be a problem. I have recenlty replaced it with a larger, 6 pole (960) rpm motor, overdriven up to 75hz, whcih is much better.
