Thread: Where to find small gear cutters

I want to make some really small gears but the smallest cutters I can find are from CTC and M0.3. Smaller than that M0.25, M0.2 and ebay has hobs but no cutters. Anyone seen anything smaller ( or in DP, 80 or more?). Hobbing is an option but one I'd prefer to leave until simpler options have been exhausted. (as is making my own cutters).

I was looking for some gear cutters a couple of years ago for my little watchmakers mill but the price for what was really only curiosity at the time dulled my interest.
Google Bergeon, they had watch and clock makers gear cutters but from memory a set was north of two gorillas.
It's worth having a look through their catalogue just to check out some of their tooling.

I would try contacting Smith and Smith in Sydney to see what they have.

Generally speaking, Bergeon is top-quality with the prices to match. I believe PP Thornton are also a good brand, although I've never used any of their gear. They are not cheap. Sometimes I see small second-hand cutters on Ebay. I've never taken much notice of final prices but bidding has usually started at around $20.

I found some larger cutters in my toolbox that were made by "TEC" in Australia. I don't know if the company is still around. They were possibly NSW-based.

kwijibo99, Could you give any more details about this watchmaker's mill you have? I'm just curious. I rarely see any for sale in Australia.

How did you go with this, did you locate any cheap-ish sources of cutters? I'm planning on making a small clock and need to buy a few cutters, the ones I have are too big for what I want to do.
