Hi guys,
Can someone please tell me the proper name for that kind of bearing.
One of my small oldish GMF motors runs on them. What sort of lubrication can I use, also.

Hi Wes,

That is a self aligning spherical sintered phosphor bronze sleeve bearing. They are often described as self or pre-lubricated but very often have a felt washer around them containing a small amount of lubricant. They are often mounted in such a way that they can move or twist to align themselves to suit the axis of the shaft that rotates within them.

The one in your picture looks like it has run dry. A trick that I've seen used to keep a small motor running is to heat the sphere up and drop it into a container of oil. Unfortunately it does nothing for the wear on the shaft of the motor.

Another trick with sintered bearings is to rest them on your thumb, fill them with oil and then with your index finger, squeeze. The finger pressure is enough to force some oil into the pores. Repeat a few times. We have a small portable fan that I've done that to a couple of times and it's still going.
