Just wondering if any forum members have subscribed and are the articles a goodread ?

Hi Mike, are you referring to the American brand magazine or the one from UK? Can't help if it's the US mag as the local newsagent doesn't get it. I get the UK Model Engineers Workshop and find it a great mag, particularly if you've got a desire to make and alter machinery.

I subscribed for a while. There were some good articles in there (and of course some uninteresting ones too). I'd suggest subscribing for a year and see if it suits. Only comes out every second month and is on the thin side so you may decide that the price is not worth it but the content is reasonable.

Like Michael I tried it for 12 months and didn't really stoke my fire so let it lapse. As was said try it and then decide as everyone has a different need. I now subscribe to Model Engine Builder ($US20ish for 4 issues) as it is more in line with what I prefer and is digital and so no os postage costs.

I have recently subscribed to it - recent special offer approx 100ish for 3 year subscription.

You can get 1 free issue for a taster and if you dont subscribe then a little while later they will offer another free issue.

I quite like it - but then I am easily impressed as I dont know much.

If you send me a PM with your postal address I can send you some recent copies to have a look at, you can pot 'em back when youve finished with them.

Have seen posts here saying its not as good as MEW but also that MEW is past its glory days - I quite enjoy reading MEW as well.

I had a subscription for about 10 years, from the mid 80's to the mid 90's. It was a good magazine and I found it useful. Then, over time, they started repeating stuff I'd already seen, the toy engines seemed more and more common, projects spanning 6 issues or more got old, and I just decided I'd got all I was going to from it. There were some great articles over the time, though. Now, no idea, but if I was interested in small scale stuff or didn't have a pretty well equipped shop so limited interest in hobby equipment and its drawbacks, I'd give it a go. It's only a small amount of money and you might find you get a lot from it. PDW

They did a good series on scraping a while back, but it went over a lot of issues, so I think it was something like 12-18 months or similar to get through the whole series. I subscribed for a few years and then stopped. Other than the scraping series I'd give my copies of HSM away to machinist friends once I'd read them. In contrast I keep every copy of MEW and would indeed love to find earlier copies I don't have. I often refer back to them when I'm building projects, or to build projects themselves from earlier issues.

I think the photographs are often clearer in the USA model mags. Sometimes that's important.
